The Vagina Monologues, by Eve Ensler

"I was worried about vaginas. I was worried about what we think about vaginas, and even more worried that we don't think about them. . . . So I decided to talk to women about their vaginas, to do vagina interviews, which became vagina monologues. I talked with over two hundred women. I talked to old women, young women, married women, single women, lesbians, college professors, actors, corporate professionals, sex workers, African American women, Hispanic women, Asian American women, Native American women, Caucasian women, Jewish women. At first women were reluctant to talk. They were a little shy. But once they got going, you couldn't stop them."

So begins Eve Ensler's hilarious, eye-opening tour into the last frontier, the forbidden zone at the heart of every woman. Adapted from the award-winning one-woman show that's rocked audiences around the world, this groundbreaking book gives voice to a chorus of lusty, outrageous, poignant, and thoroughly human stories, transforming the question mark hovering over the female anatomy into a permanent victory sign. With laughter and compassion, Ensler transports her audiences to a world we've never dared to know, guaranteeing that no one who reads The Vagina Monologues will ever look at a woman's body the same way again.

Amazon.com Review
"I say vagina because I want people to respond," says playwright Eve Ensler, creator of the hilarious, disturbing soliloquies in The Vagina Monologues, a book based on her one-woman play. And respond they do--with horror, anger, censure, and sparks of wonder and pleasure. Ensler is on a fervent mission to elevate and celebrate this much mumbled-about body part. She asked hundreds of women of all ages a series of questions about their vaginas (What do you call it? How would you dress it?) that prompt some wondrous answers. Standouts among the euphemisms are tamale, split knish, choochi snorcher, Gladys Siegelman--Gladys Siegelman?--and, of course, that old standby "down there." "Down there?" asks a composite character springing from several older women. "I haven't been down there since 1953. No, it had nothing to do with [American president] Eisenhower." Two of the most powerful pieces include a jagged poem stitched together from the memories of a Bosnian woman raped by soldiers and an American woman sexually abused as a child who reclaims her vagina as a place of wild joy.

From Booklist
Ensler's powerful, funny, incisive, insightful meditation on one of the most proscribed, vilified, taboo-tainted, shame-shrouded bodily organs in our phallocratic culture is based on personal reminiscences and on interviews with dozens of women of various religious, ethnic, and racial backgrounds. Its topics include the many attitudes women have about their vaginas, ranging from fear to fascination, and the ways those attitudes reflect and influence attitudes about sexuality, health, body image, and even spirituality. Even in the wrong hands--say, of a dry academician--Ensler's material would be enlightening. Fortunately, Ensler is first and foremost a storyteller and has fashioned her material into a highly readable script in which interviews are distilled to pithy brevity or reformatted as emotionally charged prose poems. Reading it, it is not hard to see why the off-Broadway one-woman show Ensler also crafted from its material met with critical and popular success and won Ensler a coveted Obie award. Jack Helbig

From Kirkus Reviews
An adaptation of performance pieces from Ensler's Obie Awardwinning one-woman show, inspired by several hundred interviews the playwright had with women about their genitals. The work, Ensler says, is intended to free women from the shame many have been taught to feel regarding their vaginas and, by extension, their sexuality. It's crucial, she says, ``for women to tell their stories, to share them with other people . . . Our survival as women depnds on this dialogue.'' The monologues (which range from a painful account of rape to a droll record of a woman learning to really see her vagina for the first time, in a ``vagina workshop'') vary greatly in effect, and other portions of the work (which run from character monologues to interpolations by Ensler to lists drawn from her questions to women, such as ``What does a vagina smell like?'') are fragmentary. You might have to be a woman to appreciate the humor and poignancy here, but women will. (Author tour) -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

One of the most liberating books I've ever read.
By Rachel Gibson (foxglove77@excite.com)
This book is a life changer. I read it six months ago and I cannot believe how much it has liberated me and my attitude towards my body. Like everyone says, you cannot put it down once you begin reading it. Ensler talks about the things I've kept hidden. I never knew just how central to my life my vagina is. A chapter about menstruation, my god, people talk about this? A chapter about orgasm and hair and the fear we have of our own body. The part we never like to talk about. The chapter on birth is amazing, and until then I never knew how complex the woman's vagina is. For a woman of 22, this is a very important read. If you ever get to see her read from The Vagina Monologues, go. She puts on an amazing show. Some people think it's simple but I feel it's life-changing. I would be a very different person without it and not many books can have that kind on impact.

The foundation of a great show
By Marcy L. Thompson
The Vagina Monologues is a stage piece, and it works *much* better on stage than it does as a pure book. As a stage show, it is thought-provoking, funny and appalling. A good production of this piece picks you up and carries you along. It has something to say to almost everyone, regardless of whether you are comfortable saying the word "vagina" or not.
Somehow, when I read the play, I am less captivated, and more aware of the flimsiness of the words. But the point of the thing is its performance. It is clear, from the afterword to the book, and from people I know who have been involved in productions, and from lots of people who have seen the show, that involvement with a production of this piece can change someone's life. And it really is an engaging piece: funny and moving.
When I first heard about the project (an attempt to address a culture where people rarely say the word "vagina", but there are thousands of words for "penis"), I thought it would be interesting and useful to people who aren't comfortable saying "vagina" out loud. Since I have no problem saying it, I thought it would have little relevance to me. When I saw the performance, I knew I had been wrong. But I don't know if I would have gotten that from the book alone.
I am giving this book five stars, because it works as it is intended to work: on stage. And I am glad I own it, because it is nice to dip into from time to time, when I want to recapture the effect of being in the audience. Plus, the afterword to the "V-Day" edition is extremely interesting and moving.

not quite what I had expected
By Tracy
I was somewhat dissapointed in this book. I had heard nothing but great reviews of both the book and the performances. But when I finished the book, I found myself very dissapointed. I didn't really laugh. I didn't really cry. It was decent, and perhaps there are women out there who *needed* to read it, but I just didn't find it as inspiring and wonderful as so many others have.

Martial Arts Teaching Tales of Power and Paradox: Freeing the Mind, Focusing Chi, and Mastering the Self, by Pascal Fauliot

A collection of parables and teaching stories from the martial arts traditions of Japan and China that emphasizes their spiritual foundation.

• The teaching stories in this book are based on the lives of martial arts masters and are meant to inspire questions and insights for the student.

• Written for martial artists and anyone interested in Eastern religions such as Buddhism, Zen, and Taoism.

True martial arts should never be confused with simple combat techniques. Rather, martial arts are a way that an individual, after a long and difficult apprenticeship, can gain a profound understanding of the true nature of reality and one's place in it. Over time the apprentice discovers the laws governing the subtle forces of life and realizes that their mastery is only possible after one has mastered oneself. "He who has mastered the Art doesn't use his sword: he compels his adversary to kill himself." This quote from renowned sword master Tajima no Kami perfectly expresses the paradoxical nature of martial arts teachings in China and Japan. These teaching stories are not moral fables; in fact they have nothing to prove. Their purpose is actually to inspire questions and insights that will aid the student to achieve self-realization.

Most of the stories in this book are based on actual events in the lives of martial arts teachers who have achieved legendary status. The almost superhuman abilities of some of the masters described here are evidence of the secret powers that can be wielded by those whose martial arts training is not simply the learning of physical techniques but involves the mastering of the subtle energies of the mind and body. Master of the Art of Archery Kenzo Awa could hit the center of a target even when shooting in total darkness. Assailants of Tai Chi master Yang Lu Chan found their blows did more damage to themselves than to their would-be victim. By reading--and comprehending--the tales in this book, we can acquire the same essential knowledge that these masters had--that extraordinary forces are within the grasp of those who have achieved inner peace and self-mastery.

Amazon.com Review
Even though it is now a cliché to say that learning a martial art is as much about learning to conquer oneself as it is about learning to conquer the enemy, most martial-arts books are still about the latter. Pascal Fauliot lends a refreshing voice to the field by excavating some of the great educative tales from the martial arts traditions of China and Japan. Not exactly moral tales, these stories exemplify the ideals of excellence in the martial arts, and are as entertaining as a feature film. Some of the scenarios you might expect: the master who is bushwhacked but comes out unscathed, or the master who sets his student to mundane tasks rather than fighting techniques. Others will surprise: the master who shatters an enormous piece of bamboo without touching it, or the bully who thrashes a little old man only to find himself bedridden the next day. Purportedly all true, these are inspirational stories about learning persistence, self-mastery, flexibility, concentration, and harnessing the invisible power of chi. They are also lighthearted, and retold with an expert touch that the master of any art would appreciate. --Brian Bruya

Taste of the inner meaning of martial arts
By I. Dunn
This small book leaves me begging for more. It relates tales teaching the inner meaning of the martial arts. It is divided into the following sections. 1. The message of the stories. 2. On the threshold of the mystery. 3. Confronting the mountain. 4. The snare of appearences. 5. The great test. 6. Lessons of the Zen masters. 7. Winning without fighting. 8. The ultimate secret. For those who are interested in the martial arts as a path for self development and realisation rather than just as a 'grab em and bash em' exercise in futility, this book will be a treasure for you. The martial arts have traditionally passed on its ethos and morality through tales such as these.
Many of these tales were already familiar to me as our Sensei recounts some at each training session, more or less. The book only has one major drawback, there isnt enough of it. It left me wanting more.

The Inward Journey
By Mantis
Sometimes a book shows up at a crucial moment, the missing piece of the puzzle. This is that book. For those of you that were attracted to the martial arts because of the spiritual and philosophical underpinnings behind them, this book is for you. This is Taoism and Zen through the lens of martial arts.

This is not a collection of morality tales. This is a deep plunge into sobering reality based on real events. The short stories take place in China and Japan. Reminiscent of the book, Zen Flesh, Zen Bones Classic Edition: A Collection of Zen and Pre-Zen Writings, it can serve as a guidebook on the inward journey. Some of the stories are humorous, others are quite sobering. Many are tales about Samurai. Three stories use an animal as a substitute for the actual student, such as a very talented ape, a fighting rooster and a cat.

It is amazing how the writer, Pascal Fauliot, can take so complex a subject and make it easy to understand. He can write of great mysteries, exposing the bare elements. The narrative is simple and straight forward. In "Confronting the Mountain", the opening pages of this chapter speak eloquently of the human condition. This book is a gem, translated from the French by Jon Graham.

Neat book, compelling and thoughtful
By L. A. Kane
This set of vignettes is not only fun to read but it really does make you think. Fast paced, clear writing in a style that is reminiscent of Dave Lowry. You don't have to be a martial artist to enjoy it though you will probably get more out of it if you are.

Hick Flicks: The Rise and Fall of Redneck Cinema, by Scott Von Doviak

While the pimps and players of blaxploitation movies dominated inner-city theaters, good old boys with muscle under their hoods and moonshine in their trunks roared onto drive-in screens throughout rural America. The popularity of these hick flicks grew throughout the '70s, and they attained mass acceptance with the 1977 release of Smokey and the Bandit. It marked the heyday of these regional favorites, but within a few short years, changing economic realities within the movie business and the collapse of the drive-in market would effectively spell the end of the so-called hixploitation genre. Chapters are divided into three major topics. Part One deals with good ol' boys, from redneck sheriffs, to moonshiners, to honky-tonk heroes and beyond. Part Two explores road movies, featuring backroad racers, truckers and everything in between. Part Three, In the Woods, covers movies about all manner of beasts - some of them human - populating the swamps and woodlands of rural America. Film stills are included, and an afterword examines both the decline and metamorphosis of the genre. A filmography, bibliography and index accompany the text.

Better Than A Bottle Full Of Bootleg Shine
By Hayden Childs
I'll say it loud and drunkenly: Hick Flicks is a brilliant analysis, defining the genre and subgenres of movies by and about Redneck-Americans, or, as we prefer, "Sons of the Soil."

Von Doviak starts us with an Alamo Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow ([...] as Scott canoes downriver, encountering hillbillies both planted and au naturale (that means "nekkid" or, in this case, "not planted"), to a riverside viewing of Deliverance. This experience sets Mr. Von D to wondering: "Is that banjo kid available for weddings? Failing that, should I write an in-depth analysis of redneck movies?" The answer, as Scott reveals in a surprising twist, is (brace yourselves for maximum shock value) yes.

Somewhat in the tradition of Jackass, Von D subjected himself to more movies about and by rednecks than is legal in 27 states. Von Doviak divides these into subgenres: trucker movies, stunt driver movies, chicks seeking revenge for what was done to them movies, hillbilly horror movies, documentaries about rural folk, and the like. In fact, in one of the more astounding segments of masochistic horror ever to emerge from scholarly film criticism, Von Doviak undertakes 24 hours of hillbilly horror flicks, starting with the Texas Chain Saw Massacre, which shortly emerges as one of the more intelligent and sensitive movies on the line-up. The guy deserves a Purple Heart.

Anyway, it's fun to laugh at rednecks, especially if, like me, redneck blood courses through your veins (and only occasionally coats your rage-filled hands of justice), but thinking about rednecks and the mysterious ways of redneck culture is hard work and usually limited to slightly contemptuous, brilliantly smart-assed novelists like Harry Crews. Von Doviak leads the way in thinking about an underappreciated segment of film history, one that mostly exists only in documentaries and on the USA Network now. This book's a hoot and a holler and has been scientifically proven to be more fun than a semi full of monkey sidekicks. Go buy it.

Hick Flicks is a fantastic and fun read. It's a bit like a walk down memory lane - summers of bad movies at the drive-in. God do I miss a good drive-in.

I did have some disturbing dreams about Bigfoot and the dude from The Hills Have Eyes, but I blame that as much on my cold medicine as I do on the book.

Scott Von Doviak's voice is clear and true, with enough astute observations to border on an entry for the Cahier du Cinema. I would have liked more Maury stories, but that's me. I'm a sucker for a dog.

Now you may question the relevance of a book like Hick Flicks. Hillbilly exploitation films died out with gas rationing (more or less). But I'd argue that with all this Red State/Blue State nonsense they're probably more relevant than ever.

Hollywood marketed 30 years ahead of where politics moved in the past two elections. Put that in yer corncob pipe and smoke it.

Damn good book and fun too
By John Seven
You don't actually have to care much about redneck movies to like this book - I didn't, at least not much, but Von Doviak drew me into it, largely due to his amiable writing style and sharp sense of humor - he performed the impossible task of making a history of redneck cinema actually very personable. This must be what it's like to sit down and have a beer with Von Doviak and talk hixploitation. But the book is not some vanity piece meant to spotlight the author's personality at the expense of the subject - quite the opposite. Von Doviak covers his subject with a mix of knowledge and humor that reveals his understanding of the ridiculous nature of the films he has set about to cover, while at the same time treating their history with respect and providing context that deflects the possible cliched insults that could be lobbed at these movies..

We need more people like Mr. Von Doviak writing about popular culture - he presents an unusual take on a subject that is never over the top. The book is fresh, lively, unstudied in the best possible meaning of the term, and laced with a self-deprecating sarcasm that many more critics could take cues from as they get to know their subject.

Sometimes you just need a slap upside the head and a reminder of how great an author is! And this book reminded me of how funny, smart and sexy a HelenKay Dimon book is! You’d better believe that I’m not going to let her books pass me by any more. The banter between the two main characters had me laughing out loud, and the relationships between all of the characters were real and heart-felt, and made you want to become invested in their stories long after the book ended. Well done, Ms Dimon, well done. So glad I got to read this latest one of yours and get re-acquainted with how fabulous you are!

Hailey Thorne has lost more than the average person to the military way of life–both parents, friends, boyfriends, and most recently her would-be uncle Rob. So she’s decided no-more military men are allowed in her life now on. If only she could turn off her treacherous hormones! She’d inherited Rob’s large piece of land and had been absolutely bombarded with offers from developers, entrepreneurs, lawyers, and all sorts of crazy front men. She’s had no peace! It’s gotten so bad that she’s erected a high-wire fence around the perimeter with an alarmed gate. People have to announce themselves before they can even get onto the property now!

The gate was also there to stop another problem that had been making her crazy. Her friend Jessica Mann had a bit of a stalker problem–her ex-boyfriend Pete wouldn’t take “get lost” seriously. She’d taken up residence with Hailey for security purposes, hoping to wait him out. And their third friend, Kat Fleming, had been Rob’s fiancée. After his surprise death in Afghanistan, they’d bolstered her up and helped her start her bakery in town–hoping to give her something to go on for. And surprisingly, it’d worked. Now it was time for Hailey to decide what to do with the land…and move on. But something was holding her back. What was the best choice; and what did Rob really want her to do? She was getting all mixed up in the details and the pile of offers and wasn’t able to see past it to what was really her dream. And then she starts getting calls from this Sawyer Cain that Rob had told her so much about–the one he was trying to set her up with. And this Sawyer seemed to think the land was his? WTF?

Sawyer Cain just wants to forget the hell he left behind in his last deployment in Afghanistan and create the family that he’s always wanted with his sister and best friends Marcus and Jason McAdams. His plans to set up a gun range on Rob’s property with them and create their own little place was high on his list of priorities now that he was retired. However, it didn’t seem like Rob had relayed their plans to his “niece” Hailey before he’d died. And Sawyer didn’t think she was going to take his word for it. He had a bloodstained and torn up piece of paper that could prove it, but it was the last thing he wanted to show her. It would prove his claim, but it also would be a painful reminder of Rob’s death. Since he already blamed himself for Rob’s death since he hadn’t been on site when it happened, he felt it would also cement the blame she was looking to place on him.

Let’s just imagine that these two meet up in a bar, and he doesn’t know who she is. Sparks fly and chemistry ignites. Let’s talk SUPER-NOVA hot. Amazingly hot banter. Then “Sue” leaves a disgruntled and surprised Sawyer at the bar. Next time he decides to show up at Rob’s niece’s house to discuss the property, there’s “Sue”! Hmm…this might be more difficult than he thought. It’s hard to talk business when all he can think about is pleasure…

Hailey isn’t sure that Sawyer isn’t trying to romance her for the land. Sawyer can’t see past his survivor’s guilt and his lust for Hailey to figure out how to handle this negotiation. Pleasure before business? Business before pleasure? Neither one can decide and the clock is ticking on the permits Sawyer needs to get approved. Will he have to give them and the land up to prove to Hailey that his love is the real deal?

This book is deliciously hot and heated, Sawyer is edible, the sexy scenes are to die-for, and the development of the plot was well done if a tiny bit drawn out. I can’t wait for the next book with Molly and Jason! Thanks!

Interesting book with great writing
By NH Wifey
I really liked the characters, all the characters. The interaction between them really felt like the 'family' they wanted to be. I had trouble understanding why Hailey didn't want to listen to Sawyer's proposal for the use of some of the property she inherited. Her reluctance to discuss his proposal in the beginning of their relationship, especially his connection to Ray, didn't make much sense to me. But I liked the journey to the end and the set up of the other characters for the next book. I have already pre-ordered the next installment.

I was gifted a copy of this book via netgalley in exchange for my honest thoughts opinions and a review.

Chain Of Command is the first book in Greenway Range series,

This was a first for me and reading a new author you kind of get your hopes up that the book will be as good if not better than the reviews and from the first page i just new it was just that.

Sawyer Cain is a Retired marine and he can never ever forget all he's seen and what he has tragically lost, but he can start over again and help his friends. By Opening a gun range with his closest pals and this is the first step toward a new and better life where he can finally bury the guilt he cannot seem to shake of.

But allot now depends on this amazing property he needs to buy like now… Sawyer has a problem and she happens to be the gorgeous and ever so frustrating woman who refuses to sell it to him.

Hailey Thorne is so done with all the loss she has had and anything at all to do with the military, after the closest thing she ever had to an uncle passes away tragically in Afghanistan.

And know with Sawyer showing up on her porch he has military written all over his gorgeous body. He is just one more in an extremely long line of people who want the land she has inherited, and know he's everywhere she goes she cant get away from this handsome military man. and of course Hailey just can't get this broad shouldered, dirty-talking, sexy, serious man out of her head. Or her life.

But does she really want too?

Sawyer is not above using all his well earned skills in the bedroom to try to convince her to sell, and Hailey is more than willing to let him after all why would she want to stop him. Their arrangement of pleasure-only really works well for them both… well that is until emotions get in the way.

Sawyer has a secret and he is convinced that is will have Hailey hating him forever, and Hailey she is stubborn and not willing to risk loving anyone she could lose.

O my what a great book from the moment i started reading page one i was a goner HelenKay Dimon is such a great writer. i was truly amazed the characters, they are just so real and likeable, and the sex scenes are sizzling just read this bit from the book that i picked out to show case how great HelenKay really is.

How to Write for PERCUSSION is a comprehensive text that clearly explains and simplifies all issues that percussionists and composers face with respect to each other. Written from a percussionist's perspective, it examines the behind-the-scenes processes to uncover all the tools the composer needs to comfortably create innovative and skilled percussion composition.

If you are a composer or arranger and have ever had a question about percussion writing, How to Write for PERCUSSION is the definitive source. Whether you have years of percussion writing experience or no idea how to even approach it, this book will give you hundreds of great new ideas and will show you exactly how to realize them in your music.

There are nine chapters. The first four consider issues that apply to all percussion.

1. General Logistics 2. General Notation 3. Beaters 4. Tone Color

1. General Logistics explores issues of movement, instrument choice, instrument setup, concert production, and sound production. These are the often overlooked concerns which significantly influence the success of the composition.

2. General Notation details the key notational concepts for percussion writing, including guidelines for how to create parts and scores, how to set up a notational system for multi-percussion setups, and how to deal with articulation, phrasing, note length, and special effects.

3. Beaters describes each beater, its specific uses, special effects, and issues of changing beaters within a piece.

4. Tone Color discusses the physical factors that can be used to manipulate timbre on all percussion instruments.

The following five chapters discuss specific types of instruments.

5. Drums 6. Keyboard Percussion 7. Metal 8. Unpitched Wood 9. Miscellaneous Instruments

Drums, Keyboard Percussion, Metal, and Wood deal with instruments that are struck. Miscellaneous Instruments deals with instruments that are scraped, cranked, shaken, and blown through, as well as some struck instruments that do not fit into the other categories.

The five appendices expand and reinforce the concepts detailed in the rest of the book.

A. Sample Setups B. Scores with Comments C. Beaters D. Dynamics E. Suggested Works

A. Sample Setups is a collection of instrument lists with their corresponding setup diagrams and instrument keys.

B. Scores with Comments presents excerpts from real scores with comments that elaborate upon important logistcal and notational issues.

D. Dynamics charts the relative dynamics of various instruments struck with various beaters.

an excellent companion to standard orchestration texts
By Greg Michaels
This book is an excellent companion to the standard orchestration texts one might buy, such as Adler or Forsyth. It goes into great detail about all of the instruments, sticks, notation, etc. Basically anything you could need to start writing for percussion, which isn't often covered in great detail in other books. It's very nice to now have a reference that doesn't gloss over the percussion and gives very good insights into writing for this large and complex body of instruments.

composer's friend
By osen
I am a concert music composer. One of the things I like about being such a composer in the 21th-century is the abundance of percussion instruments and complex rhythms available to us. However, writing and notating these percussion parts is also a challenge, unique to the 21th-century, and we must have the guidance and assistance of professional percussionist. "How to Write for Percussion" is now my new guide to notating composing for percussion. I am enjoying this book very much.

Information Security Management: Concepts and Practice, by Bel G. Raggad

Information security cannot be effectively managed unless secure methods and standards are integrated into all phases of the information security life cycle. And, although the international community has been aggressively engaged in developing security standards for network and information security worldwide, there are few textbooks available that provide clear guidance on how to properly apply the new standards in conducting security audits and creating risk-driven information security programs.

An authoritative and practical classroom resource, Information Security Management: Concepts and Practice provides a general overview of security auditing before examining the various elements of the information security life cycle. It explains the ISO 17799 standard and walks readers through the steps of conducting a nominal security audit that conforms to the standard. The text also provides detailed guidance for conducting an in-depth technical security audit leading to certification against the 27001 standard. Topics addressed include cyber security, security risk assessments, privacy rights, HIPAA, SOX, intrusion detection systems, security testing activities, cyber terrorism, and vulnerability assessments.

This self-contained text is filled with review questions, workshops, and real-world examples that illustrate effective implementation and security auditing methodologies. It also includes a detailed security auditing methodology students can use to devise and implement effective risk-driven security programs that touch all phases of a computing environment―including the sequential stages needed to maintain virtually air-tight IS management systems that conform to the latest ISO standards.

Comprehensive and well written
By Emilio
This book presents the key concepts in information security management. The author also proposes easy-to-follow methodologies for implementing the steps to acheve optimal information security management as a series of quantifiable steps that conform to the information security life cycle.

Even more surprising is the author's easy-to-read writing style. Undergraduate and graduate students, as well as IT professionals will enjoy reading this book. I have never read a better discussion of the security life cycle as it is presented in this book. Numerical examples and mini case studies are included which further enhance the discussion on the applciation of the methodologies. That is, the author goes from concept to methodology to implementation of the methodology in a relatively easy-to-follow format. This book also introduced relevant national and international security standards that apply to security planning, risk management, and security auditing.

This book is one of the most comprehensive discussions on information security management I have ever read. Information security managers and other IT professionals can apply the methodologies introduced in this book; this is not a book that simply states concepts and explains them. This book can also serve as an excellent textbook for instructors in university degree programs or professional certificate programs whereby students will gain a complete and detailed view of information security management.

By Gopan
This book is a comprehensive introduction to Information Security Management in terms of concepts and practise. To my knowledge , there is not any other book available now that presents the security life cycle as covered in this book . Major Information security management activities are very well presented and discussed . Existing national and international security standards are related to each of those activities. Most often a very detailed methodology of how to conduct the security management activity is presented with great details and demonstrated with easy examples.

I have examined several other books on Information security management and they deal mostly with relevant topics on Information security management in unfinished ways. In fact , You probably need to read about a dozen boks in order to grasp the full meaning of information security management. Also most often , these books are either focussed most of their analysis on government regulations without touching the international security standards adopted by most of the world but less in the States , or base their discussions on case studies that do not seem to extend to real world problems that closely relate to common organizations for which information security management solutions are urgently needed to develop and document .

The Pooh Perplex : A Freshman Casebook, by Frederick C. Crews

In this devastatingly funny classic, Frederick Crews skewers the ego-inflated pretensions of the schools and practitioners of literary criticism popular in the 1960s, including Freudians, Aristotelians, and New Critics. Modeled on the "casebooks" often used in freshman English classes at the time, The Pooh Perplex contains twelve essays written in different critical voices, complete with ridiculous footnotes, tongue-in-cheek "questions and study projects," and hilarious biographical notes on the contributors. This edition contains a new preface by the author that compares literary theory then and now and identifies some of the real-life critics who were spoofed in certain chapters.

The Pooh Perplex
By Zoe Gibbons
I first read The Pooh Perplex in the summer before my freshman year of college; my father presented it to me as an encapsulation of the reasons why he had abandoned his English major. I had not yet encountered Leavis, Crane, and the other critics so marvelously parodied in Crews's book, but I spent a good few hours shrieking with laughter at Myron Masterson's vision of Kanga as castrating "'Mom' figure" and Simon Lacerous's characterization of the bear himself as a flabby old Tory with a string of knightly titles and an overfondness for condensed milk.

Then I came to college and took a Literary Criticism and Theory class; with wonder, I recognized in my casebook more and more of the bizarre characters inhabiting Crews's topsy-turvy hermeneutic milieu. Oddest of all, I found that my reading of The Pooh Perplex had actually provided me with a fairly solid overview of structuralism, Marxist theory, and other critical concoctions my professor obliged me to imbibe. And when I gave Crews's work a second reading, I discovered a myriad of hilarities that had previously passed me by.

Though it is depressing that Crews's zany satire can help a student of literature grasp the principal critical theories of the past fifty years, I disagree with my father's justification for forsaking his major. Many critics unintentionally self-parody; to endure their bombast, the reader must absorb the good, dismiss the inane, and find in the ludicrous a scrap or two of humor. Fortunately, we have Crews to assist us with that last task. Satire is a dying art; read The Pooh Perplex to understand why it is still necessary.

Brilliant and funny
By John Duncan
It was probably the publication of Postmodern Pooh, Frederick Crews's second venture into Pooh studies, that explains the renewed availability of The Pooh Perplex more than 40 years after its first appearance. But whatever the reason, it is an excellent thing that modern readers can get hold of it, both because it is a brilliant and witty book in itself and also because it makes a natural companion for Postmodern Pooh.

For those who have not met the book before it should be explained that it is a series of parodies of different styles of literary criticism (those that were fashionable in the 1960s) applied to Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner, collected together as a "case book" of the kind that was then popular for elementary English courses, and accompanied by Questions and Study Projects prepared by the editor, ostensibly Crews himself, but in reality as much of a parody as the articles themselves.

No doubt one would need to be familiar already with the parodied styles to get the most from the book, but no matter; one can get a great deal of amusement from it without any specialist knowledge, and some of the sources are fairly obvious even to non-specialists, the Freudian analysis by "Karl Anschauung", for example, or the proletarian analysis by "Martin Tempralis". On the other hand, readers born since the book was written may not easily recognize F. R. Leavis thinly disguised as "Simon Lacerous".

The non-specialist reader will easily be tempted to believe that Crews is exaggerating. Surely no serious expert on English literature could really express some of the sillier ideas expressed in this book? Alas, he amply demonstrates with real quotations from real (and apparently serious) publications that they could and they did.

Keep You In Confusion
By Kevin L. Nenstiel
Frederick Crews made his name back in 1963 with this punchy, sardonic parody of academic self-importance. Over 45 years later, it retains its power to cut to the quick. Though not laugh-out-loud hilarious, it has a wit that exposes truth to the light of day. Though it goes on a bit longer than is actually necessary to prove its point, it remains a reminder to those of us who work with words and ideas of why we need to be humble.

In his facetious introduction, Crews tells eager freshman that this book "is frankly designed to keep you in confusion." Since too many freshman texts to exactly that, this take is all too just. The satirical articles then go on to deflate the most pompous mid-century literary critics, including Lacan, Bloom, and Eliot. Some of the references may be dated, but even if we don't recognize all of Crews' individual targets, we know the type.

The paradoxical aspect is that this book could almost be used to teach how to do criticism correctly. By mocking what the various schools do wrong to make themselves ridiculous, Crews also shows how they can be made communicative and useful. That being the case, every English major should have a copy of this book thrust into their hands. Literate and dense, but readable and funny, this is a must for all of us working in the humanities.

This careful revision of one of the best-selling General Anthropology texts available now features vastly expanded coverage of physical anthropology and archaeology. This serves to make Kottak the most balanced introduction to the four fields of anthropology. A wealth of the “Where In The World” Maps lets students view important geographical data “up close” as well as in the broader context of the geographical area. Helpful marginal icons tell students when more information is available on the CD-ROM, Website, or elsewhere in the text. Engaging boxed features, “Interesting Issues”, “In the News”, and the widely-acclaimed “Beyond the Classroom,” capture student interest by focusing on provocative issues, current events, and student research. Easy-to-use end-of-chapter reviews now include an all-new numbered chapter summary which students will find indispensable as a study tool, as well as glossaries, critical thinking and internet exercises, and all-new case studies designed for use with Culture Sketches, 3/e by Peters-Golden, an ethnographic readings book available with Kottak.

About the Author
Conrad Phillip Kottak (A.B. Columbia College 1963; Ph.D. Columbia University, 1966) is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Michigan, where he has taught since 1968. In 1991 he was honored for his teaching by the University and state of Michigan. In 1992 he received an excellence in teaching award from the College of Literature, Sciences, and the Arts of the University of Michigan. And in 1999 the American Anthropological Association (AAA) awarded Professor Kottak the AAA/Mayfield Award for Excellence in the Undergraduate Teaching of Anthropology. Professor Kottak has done ethnographic field work in Brazil (since 1962), Madagascar (since 1966), and the United States. His general interests are in the processes by which local cultures are incorporated--and resist incorporation--into larger systems. This interest links his earlier work on ecology and state formation in Africa and Madagascar to his more recent research on global change, national and international culture, and the mass media. The third edition of Kottak's popular case study Assault on Paradise: Social Change in a Brazilian Village, based on his field work in Arembepe, Bahia, Brazil, was published in 1999 by McGraw-Hill. In a research project during the 1980s, Kottak blended ethnography and survey research in studying "Television's Behavioral Effects in Brazil." That research is the basis of Kottak's book Prime-Time Society: An Anthropological Analysis of Television and Culture (Wadsworth 1990)--a comparative study of the nature and impact of television in Brazil and the United States. Kottak's other books include The Past in the Present: History, Ecology and Cultural Variation in Highland Madagascar (1980), Researching American Culture: A Guide for Student Anthropologists (1982) (both University of Michigan Press) and Madagascar: Society and History (1986) (Carolina Academic Press). The most recent editions (tenth) of his texts Anthropology: The Exploration of Human Diversity and Cultural Anthropology will be published by McGraw-Hill in summer 2003 along with the first edition of Physical Anthropology and Archaeology. He is also the author of Mirror for Humanity: A Concise Introduction to Cultural Anthropology (3rd ed., McGraw-Hill, 2003) and (with Kathryn A. Kozaitis) of On Being Different: Diversity and Multiculturalism in the North American Mainstream (2nd ed., McGraw-Hill, 2003). Conrad Kottak's articles have appeared in academic journals including American Anthropologist, Journal of Anthropological Research, American Ethnologist, Ethnology, Human Organization, and Luso-Brazilian Review. He has also written for more popular journals, including Transaction/SOCIETY, Natural History, Psychology Today, and General Anthropology. In recent research projects, Kottak and his colleagues have investigated the emergence of ecological awareness in Brazil, the social context of deforestation and biodiversity conservation in Madagascar, and popular participation in economic development planning in northeastern Brazil. Since 1999 Professor Kottak has been active in the University of Michigan’s Center for the Ethnography of Everyday Life, supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. In that capacity, for a research project entitled “Media, Family, and Work in a Middle-Class Midwestern Town,” Kottak has investigated how middle class families draw on various media in planning, managing, and evaluating their choices and solutions with respect to competing demands of work and family.

A Great Introduction to the Basics of Anthropology
By A Customer
This book is great for beginning anthropology students or people who just want to learn a little more about it! Basically, the author hits the main points (kinship, culture, primates, language, etc.) in an extremely easy to understand fashion. There are clear, concise definitions throughout, which I found to be very helpful when using it in the college classroom. Overall, a great choice for an introduction to the study of anthropology!

The Book Itself
By Stephen Pellerine
I agree that if one can purchase a book for a fraction of the price it may be a better option, but I also think that in reviewing a book, especially an academic book, I am more inclined to rate the product than the price. It is not uncommon for an academic text to carry such a fee. At the time of this review there is another review giving it a 1 rating with little to say other than the price is too high.

I have the older version of this book - and if you look at older versions you can see ratings of 5, thus; I cannot imagine that the content of this is now suddenly 1.

If new to Anthropology you will learn about the different areas/focuses of anthropology and will have an interesting venture into new cultures and societal concepts. This book is like a "academic" national geographic with wonderful references and more of a reliance on academic terms and concepts, so, a great read I think even for folks not walking down the road to anthropology but simply enjoy a good read on our world from a thoughtful perspective. Great images, supporting graphics, and case studies to entertain while educate.

So - sure, go for an older version or of your wallet has a larger bottom than most of us get the most recent. Despite this heavy price tag, now as of 2010, it will not stay in time (I assume) and feel that a 1 star based on price is an unfair blow to a wonderful literary and academic composition that has stood the test of time since its first printing in 1974. Each step, each revision, would have been incremental - why not this version?

If you want the previous editions see link below, it would be wise to go there (but this is still an excellent book)
