About the Author

William M. Klepper is a professor of management at the Columbia Business School, where he teaches a course on executive leadership and serves as the academic director of executive education. These corporate cautionary tales point to the crucial importance of responsible corporate governance, something in shockingly short supply in recent years. In this book, Columbia Business School Professor William M. Klepper discusses why boards must show "tough love" to CEOs to keep them in line with corporate goals. He details how a "Social Contract" can set the working partnerships between directors and CEOs. Klepper, a management expert in board and executive relationships, has worked on executive education with some of the world's best-known firms, including AT&T, Sony and Johnson & Johnson. He tends to refer to these experiences and his credentials frequently, name-dropping with abandon. But maybe his self-promotion is justified, because he sure knows his subject. getAbstract thinks board members and CEOs will learn a lot from Klepper's insightful, instructive and fascinating case histories.

Good Resource for Nonprofit Consultation

I have found this book to be a very good resource for consultation with nonprofit chairs and CEOs. Most of the nonprofit material on governance and leadership focuses at the conceptual level. This book provides practical applications that are as applicable to nonprofits as for profits. The focus on the team relationship between the chair and CEO is important because too many nonprofit boards see their job as supervising the CEO on the operations of the organization rather than teaming with the CEO to advance strategic interests. This book provides a very useful frame for understanding the relationship between the chair and CEO.

Hamilton Sheppard the Mayor of Mobile Alabama and Klan member; was Liza's father and Boss of Willie Rae senior, who was a Christian and Lisa and Willie Jr. father. He was faced with a choice that his Christianity wouldn't allow him to make; his son was rebellious and on path of destruction, Willie Rae found himself having an unspoken bond, with the Mayor's wife Patricia Ann Sheppard, who was also a Christian and a decent White woman if there ever was one in the South. The black farm workers called Patricia Mrs. Patty; it was a name giving to her by the colored workers as a term of endearment. The colored workers were called the Sheppard's-men giving to them by Hamilton Sheppard and his brother Jud as a term of ownership; even though slavery was emancipated. Patricia was nothing like her husband Hamilton, in fact she was an activist of sorts for the colored. This didn't sit too well with Hamilton. The hate he harbored for the colored and the Christian love that Patricia exerted tainted their marriage. And because she didn't share Hamilton views he was often violent towards her; he hated what she stood for so much that he wanted her dead. The day would come when blood of the innocent would be spilt on the hanging tree, that they now call the blood tree.

Disappointing ending

Very disappointing fifth book in this series.

While I am disappointed that the book (which appears to be the final book in the series based on current information here) leaves an endless tangle of loose ends and incomplete storylines, I am most disappointed in the continual sadistic torture of the main character.

Poor Black. Or that is how he started out in my eyes. Poor Black. His tortures never end. He is always, always, the victim of physical, mental and emotional at the hands of those who were/are the nearest and dearest to him. After five books of it, I am weary of waiting for the next horrible scene to be visited upon him -- often, sadly, due to his own complicity. Or perhaps, stupidity. The man cannot figure out who to trust and when in doubt, makes the worst possible decisions. Worst of all, perhaps, is his stubbornly blind insistence on allegiance to his foster father, based on his feelings of worthlessness and gratitude makes him appear not sympathetic, but pathetic in my eyes. At this point, he has become Pitiful Black.

I am also weary of waiting for a truly great sex scene between Black and Calyx. It took long enough for them to have any sex and even then, it was not the sex Black really wanted. I was waiting patiently for that scene to occur and yet in five books, it did not. Talk about all foreplay and no follow through.

The series had so much promise -- intriguing characters, great writing, complex plot, evil villains to vanquish, complex anti-heroes who need to heal themselves and find love. So much promise. I was hoping that the main couple would have some sort of happy ending or at least some really amazing sex. I was hoping that Black would truly take control of his own life, see people for who they truly are. While he did make some inroads in that area near the end, I think it was too late for me because I was just tired of him being tortured.

I was hoping the story would be tied up in this fifth and apparently last installment. Instead all I got was a twisted skein of a dark yarn whose ends are flying in the breeze with nothing knitting them together except my annoyance.

At this point, I am unsure if I would read another book in this series because my frustration level is too high.

I am there is another conclusion because this can not be over. We got nothing new and no questions were answered. I am just getting frustrated now. Great story but I want answers!!!

This one was fun simply for the fact Calyx took center stage and I absolutely adore the rakish empath :) Almost missed doing a review because I read straight into the next book, but as usual it was riveting and the sexual angst was delicious.

His current research is focused on dynamic models of resource sharing, and on the application of stochastic control theory in economics and operations. About the Author

David Wallace was born in San Rafael, California, in 1976, but has been resident in the UK since 1977. He studied theoretical physics at Oxford University from 1994-2002, but upon realising his research interests lay mostly in conceptual and foundational aspects of physics, he moved across into philosophy of physics. For the last six years he has been Tutorial Fellow in Philosophy of Science at Balliol College, Oxford. He holds PhDs in physics and in philosophy, and his research interests span a wide range of issues on the boundary between philosophy and physics: symmetry and the gauge principle, the direction of time, the structure of quantum field theory, and of course the interpretation of quantum mechanics.

The best book on the Everett (Many-Worlds) approach to quantum mechanics

This is the definitive book for anyone interested in the Everett, or Many-Worlds, formulation of quantum theory. David Wallace is a leading philosopher of physics, with an incredibly deep understanding of the underlying physics.

It isn't a popular-level book; this is a scholarly work, aimed at professional philosophers, physicists, and students. Wallace gives a thorough discussion of the main issues confronting the contemporary Everettian: decoherence, the emergence of classical worlds, pointer states, the origin of the Born Rule for probability, and time-asymmetry. The style is uniformly clear and engaging. Readers will certainly come to the work with a wide variety of opinions on the plausibility of Many-Worlds, but everyone should get a lot out of reading this book.

The strongest arguments for the many-worlds interpretation

David Wallace has produced a classic. This will be *the* standard account of the Everett (or "many-worlds," if you will) interpretation for a long time to come. The breadth and depth of topics covered is staggering: the problem of ontology, the problem of preferred basis, the problem of probability, the problem of inference and confirmation, the problem of person identity, the problem of directionality of time, and many more, are all addressed in detail with clarity and elegance.

To me, as a physicist with philosophical leanings, this book is scary and inspiring at the same time. It's scary because one gets the sense of the hardness of these questions, and the amount of knowledge from disparate fields (physics, philosophy, probability theory) and the amount of work necessary to make progress on these problems. It's inspiring because David Wallace has shown that it can be done.

If whatever reason you're interested in the Everett interpretation, you must acquire this book. Even if you are vehemently opposed to the theory, you must take on Wallace's arguments.

Note: Parts of the chapters on probability and inference can get really technical, but you can skip the technical parts and still get an excellent sense of his arguments. Does he solve the problem of probability? My opinion: yes, to a large extent. I feel that it has not been fully solved, but I agree with Wallace that it's unlikely we'll solve the problem until we get a better handle on similar problems in the foundations of probability.

Some very technical parts but doesn't get in the way of the argument which is fairly easy to follow.

I liked this book a lot. It had parts which were very technical (it is quantum physics after all) but the main thread of the argument is easy to follow and convincing. The idea argued for is the Everettian or Many worlds interpretation of Quantum Mechanics. To bolster his argument he applies the equations of the theory which can be quite technical but then he usually goes on to explain philosophically the justification of the interpretation. I suggest people who are not familiar with the mathematics of QM treat the equations like sentences from another language inserted into the text to make the author look smart and focus on the English translation which is the argument. The book is very comprehensible without the equations but it is a rigorous text and I think Wallace felt compelled to include them.

Suny (political science, Univ. of Chicago; Looking Toward Ararat, Indiana Univ., 1993) is a highly regarded scholar of the late Soviet Union. His present work, a textbook survey of that country's "turbulent tale," charts the "traumatic and painful transformations" of Russia from decrepit tsarist autocracy to post-Soviet chaos, corruption, and uncertainty. Suny's tone is judicious, and his judgment that the Soviet experiment's great achievement of "rough modernization of a backward, agrarian society," which produced nonetheless an incompletely modernized society for the 1980s and 1990s, is well supported. He is particularly good on World War II, its cost, and its impact. Each chapter has suggestions for further readings, with a chronology of dates at the end. A good read

This is a good book for people just trying to get a grasp on what's going on. There are some "generalizations" as someone mentioned in an earlier review, but they are less unsubstantiated than they are just not always elaborated upon. I think it's a blessing, since Suny's other book on Soviet Essays & Documents is a lot more precise and, consequently, hard to get through. It's good information though, and especially in the Soviet Experiment his style of writing makes for an easy, fair-minded, fascinating read.

Fine Survey; 4.5 Stars

This is a very fine survey of Soviet history from the Russian Revolution to the collapse of the Soviet state. While this is a chronologically arranged account, Suny divides Soviet history into a set of sensibly selected periods. These are the Russian Revolution and establishment of the Soviet state in the Civil War, the period of modest relaxation of state efforts at control that was the New Economic Policy (NEP), the Stalinist revolution from above and WWII, the efforts at reform after Stalin, the stagnation of the Brezhnev decades, and the final effort at reform that led to the fall of the Soviet state. Major political, social, economic, and to a lesser extent, intellectual developments are discussed for each period. Suny makes a very successful effort to balance narrative and analysis. Controversial issues are described as such and references given to appropriate further reading. The balance between sufficient detail and maintaining a good narrative flow within the limits of a moderate sized survey is excellent. Consistent themes are the discrepancies between Marxist doctrine and the social realities of Imperial Russia and the Soviet Union, the enormous transformation of Soviet society that took place under the leadership of the Communist party, the brutality of Stalin, and the consistent Soviet suppression of civil society and democratic impulses. The bibliography is excellent. This book is an excellent entry into the complicated literature on the Soviet Union and recommended strongly.
