About the Author
Joshua M. Greene has produced films for PBS and Disney, has served as vice president for New York’s largest PR firm, and was appointed director of strategic planning for the United Nations Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders. He was also an adjunct professor at Hofstra University in New York. His previous works include the best-selling Here Comes the Sun: The Spiritual and Musical Journey of George Harrison; Justice at Dachau: The Trials of an American Prosecutor; Witness: Voices from the Holocaust; and Gita Wisdom: An Introduction to India’s Essential Yoga Text. In 1970, he was initiated as Yogesvara Das by Bhakivedanta Swami Prabhupada and served for thirteen years in Prabhupada’s society as director of French-language publications.

While visiting the United States, the Beatles heard a broadcast of the Kallman record on radio. Of the four superstars, George Harrison was most taken by the sound. He asked the band’s road manager to order copies of the album, and back in London Harrison distributed them to friends.

That year, interest in the Hare Krishna chant expanded in a variety of ways. On his posthumous album, titled Om, jazz saxophonist John Coltrane and fellow musicians opened and closed the improvised tracks by quoting Krishna from the Bhagavad Gita: “Rites that the Vedas ordain and the rituals taught by the scriptures, the oblation, the flame into which they are offered—all these am I.” That was also the year Jimi Hendrix released his album Axis: Bold as Love, with his own face superimposed over the image of Krishna’s Universal Form. Soon after, Allen Ginsberg appeared on William F. Buckley’s television talk show Firing Line and sang the Hare Krishna mantra to a nationwide viewing audience. Not long after that, folksinger Tom Paxton referred to the Hare Krishna chant in his song “Talking Vietnam Potluck Blues”: “So we all lit up and by and by / The whole platoon was flyin’ high / With a beautiful smile on the Captain’s face / He smelled like midnight on St. Mark’s Place / Cleanin’ his weapon / Chantin’ sumpin’ about Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna.” Author Tom Wolfe added to the momentum by including a description of the mantra in his book The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.

Before coming to America, had the Swami imagined what success would look like, he might not have foreseen such assimilation of the maha-mantra into pop culture. If he had been told, he would not have objected. “Chaitanya Mahaprabhu used to cover his ears, pretending to not want to hear the chanting, as a way of tempting children to chant Hare Krishna,” he recalled. “However it is done, the chanting is potent and it will act.”

Through a combination of karmic good fortune, divine plan, jazz albums, pop songs and talk shows, the Hare Krishna mantra was spreading and the Swami’s following grew.

Superb biography of an inspiring personality

This is an exceptionally well-written biography written by Joshua Greene with fluency, depth of feeling for his subject, and with the realization born of four decades of practising the age-old spiritual teachings and practices taught by the Swami. The book is big, but so interestingly written that the reader eagerly plows through the pages. I love reading biographies of great leaders through the ages and the one whose story is told in this book (A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada) comes across as very spiritually evolved, very compassionate, down to earth, and selfless.

I am really glad I bought this book and read it. It touched my heart, stimulated my intellect, and has made me want to check out the Swami's teachings in more detail. Highly recommend it.

Thrilling, riveting, illuminating, hard to put down

I was a little skeptical going into this, since I have read most of the biographies of Prabhupada already out there. To try to make a one volume work seemed to me not worth it.

I must commend the author for doing a fantastic job. I learned new things about this amazing swami's life. The book weaves a very compelling and informative narrative.

There were a few problems I had. Using a term like Hindu misogyny is not accurate at all. There is no fear of women in Vedic culture. Degraded practices may be present in the modern age, but those are not rooted in the original culture, which gives so much stress to protecting women.

Also, neither the swami nor the Vedas put forward the flat earth theory. Recorded conversations from Prabhupada make the point quite clear; that the planets are round.

It would have been nice if the author included the story of Prabhupada meeting someone who advised him to sell books instead of magazines, as that was a major turning point in the publication effort prior to the travel to the US.

All in all, a great book that is suited for all audiences.

Great selection of words, but Not searchable

I just downloaded this book. It has a terrific range of words, BUT is NOT searchable, nor does it have a detailed contents page at the beginning which would make it easier to use without a search function. The lack of either of these features, greatly effects the book's appeal as an ebook. When and if these features are added, it will be an excellent resource.

It is a good book to find interesting words

Interesting book, but it mis-defines a lot of words. I would suggest not buying it. For example, the book defines "judicature" with a definition that would be suited to "jurisdiction" but not "judicature".

About the Author
Formerly a registered nurse working in clinical neurology and neurosurgery, Andrew T. The best NLP book of the last 5 years

'With hindsight, maybe dressing up as Satan was a step too far, but sometimes I just cannot resist. When a consultant psychiatrist called me to book an appointment to "confront her Catholic guilt", then something inside my head just started shouting "Go on!! She's a psychiatrist! Do it!! Do the session dressed as Satan!!"'

If you like that extract, then you'll love this book. It's a series of bite-sized articles, case studies and "Tales from a neurolinguist's journal" drawn from Austin's practice as a hypnotherapist and former career as a psychiatric nurse.

The book comes with heavyweight endorsement from the likes of Steve Andreas and Bill O'Hanlon, who describes Austin as 'the British Milton Erickson' - although given the degree of irreverence for the psychiatric establishment and the willingness to satirise some elements of the NLP community, "the British Richard Bandler" might be a little bit closer to conveying the flavour of the book.

Published by Real People Press, the Mark Andreas hippy-art cover makes it look like classic NLP works such as 'Frogs Into Princes' and 'Trance-Formations', and it's good enough to stand in that company. There really is an insight on nearly every page. The psych nursing background gives Austin an unusual depth of knowledge of the oft-neglected 'neuro' part of NLP, which provides useful perspectives on disorders like OCD.

Many people will be familiar with the "That's so obvious - why didn't I notice that before?" moments that come thick and fast when you first encounter NLP. I'm pleased to say that after 10 years as an NLP trainer, this book could still give me plenty of those. Of course a decision-making process that uses movies is going to get better results than one restricted to stills! Damn!

Did I mention that the book is often laugh-out-loud funny? He got away with that "Satan" thing too - in fact the client was so pleased with the results that she paid about six times what he asked. One thing I'm taking away from it is to be braver in my changework sessions.

For my money this is the most significant NLP book of the last five years. Luckily it's also one of the most readable. More please!

NLP's most gifted storyteller.

A series of stories from the author's experiences using Neuro-linguistic Programming, as a non-traditional therapist and a nurse in UK trauma, neurology, and children's oncology wards. The author tells stories as provocative as Richard Bandler's (NLP cofounder and legend), with the warmth, wisdom, and wit of Mark Twain. It will appeal most to those interested in or familiar with NLP, but it is accessible and enjoyable for everybody. My girlfriend, who has only a passing acquaintance with NLP, devoured it with great pleasure in the course of two afternoons.

So much teaching in such short stories

I am rewarding myself for completing household chores by allowing myself the pleasure of reading another "chapter-ette" before completing another chore. In fact, I'm actually implementing Kaisen - breaking my chores up so I can get back to The Rainbow Machine more often. I've been a registered nurse for almost 40 years and Andrew's examples validate many of my personal experiences of doing the ordinary differently (negative staff reaction). I'm planning to retire soon and work as a hypnotist. I will be referring to this book often. It's obvious that a single reading is not enough for the curious experiencer of this book.

My husband has never agreed to being hypnotized by me or anyone else - although when I asked him what his doctor had to say about his blood work recently (he allows his cholesterol and BP managed by pills) the answer was "you look good on paper". That seems like he's in a trance to me. Maybe I'll find the right inspiration to help him change health management in this book.

I also want to note that this book is edited by Steve Andreas. I had pretty much the same experience (the desire to savor the stories) in how I read Sweet Fruit from the Bitter Tree (Mark Andreas) - another book recommended on Steve's blog. When an ethical communications genius edits the work of another communications genius, the result is a book to savor. Thank you Andrew, Mark and Steve.

Marilyn Shannon, author of Fertility, Cycles & Nutrition, knew her popular book was due for an update. But even she was surprised by the explosion of research in this area since her last edition in 2001.

"I was amazed when I did the literature search," Shannon says. "I knew there had been an increase in research on nutrition for fertility, but my search results far exceeded my expectations." Shannon began her research by whittling down over 900 journal article citations specifically related to her topics, to 500 abstracts, and then to 300 full articles, many of which are cited in the reference pages of the new book.

The result is a completely revised and expanded 4th edition of Fertility, Cycles & Nutrition: Self-care for improved cycles and fertility...naturally!. Based on her experience both as an instructor of human anatomy and physiology at Indiana University Purdue University at Fort Wayne, Indiana, and over 25 years as a Natural Family Planning (NFP) teacher, Shannon is convinced that in most cases, self-care for better fertility is the best place to start.

A mainstay originally for couples practicing NFP, Fertility, Cycles & Nutrition has helped thousands of women over the years to improve their fertility cycles, often either making the practice of NFP easier, relieving cycle irregularities, or helping them to achieve a much-desired pregnancy.

While the new 4th edition does not really conflict with the old, it goes far beyond previous editions.

"There are many new options for basic topics like PMS (premenstrual syndrome), short luteal phase, or heavy bleeding," Shannon explains. Yet it also acknowledges that flexibility is important, as what is best for one person might not be what is best for another. For instance, Shannon recommends both animal and plant protein sources, but is flexible as to how much and what kinds. Her recommendations for fats and oils have strengthened the emphasis on animal fats, and she now recommends fish oil as well as flax oil.

Part II moves into targeted advice for supplements aimed at improving specific cycle irregularities such as PMS, painful or heavy periods, PCOS, infertility, repeated miscarriage, etc. While new research still supports Shannon's longstanding recommendation of the vitamin Optivite PMT for many cycle irregularities, she also now endorses ProCycle PMT and Fertility Blend for overcoming certain problems or trying to achieve pregnancy. The new edition also has expanded information on nutrition during pregnancy, age-related infertility, preventing birth defects, celiac disease, low sexual desire, and male fertility-- including the importance of antioxidants for men -- and much more.

Marilyn McCusker Shannon holds a master s degree in human physiology with a minor in biochemistry from Indiana University s Medical Sciences Program. She is a tenured, part time instructor of biology at Indiana University Purdue University at Fort Wayne, Indiana, where she has taught human anatomy and physiology for the last 25 years.

Marilyn and her husband Ron have been a Teaching Couple for the Couple to Couple League for Natural Family Planning (NFP) since 1982. Her interest in the impact of nutrition on reproductive health is an outgrowth of her educational background and her experience as an NFP instructor. She has written many articles on nutrition and fertility for the Couple to Couple League's magazine, Family Foundations, and has spoken widely on this topic. She was awarded the Couple to Couple League's Edward M. Keefe, M.D. Award for the Scientific Advancement of Natural Family Planning following the first edition of Fertility, Cycles & Nutrition.

HIghly Recommended

I think this is one of the best books on women's health and fertility-related issues out there. Every midwife should read this. But why only four stars? The author promotes the consumption of canola oil, which is not a "healthy" oil. Also the recommended level for vitamin D (400-1000 IU)fall way below what it should be for most people. I was also a bit leery about the author's recommendations for flax seed oil. Although this oil undoubtedly has many benefits, there are also many downfalls as well. For instance, those following a WAP diet may be interested to know that flax seed contains a large amount of phytic acid, which inhibits the absorption of minerals. Although written from a more vitamin and basic nutrition standpoint, I hope any future additions would contain more research on how herbs can help many women's problems (for instance, many issues can be helped simply by working on liver health with herbs such as stinging nettle) and also more research on/references to the soaking of whole grains to reduce phytic acid.

Bad advice on supplements

First of all, the book is poorly organized which makes it hard to extract information that applies to specific health issues. Nutrition advice for various health conditions is sprinkled throughout the book in various chapters. She is dedicating very little of this book to the issue of endometriosis (she doesn't seem to have an in-depth knowledge of that subject), so if that's the condition you have, buy a different nutrition book that focuses primarily on that issue.

Finally, as other reviewers mentioned, she is strongly advocating using OptiVite (not a very high quality nutritional supplement). In her defense, she seems to genuinely believe that it can help. She cites scientific evidence behind it (sort of), and how various vitamins and minerals in that supplement affect the fertility cycle. She sounds very convincing, and she mentions examples of women whom this supplement helped to get pregnant. She is defending the fact that this supplement contains HUGE doses of certain vitamins and minerals (often significantly exceeding the recommended daily dose, and often at the maximum level that is considered "safe") by listing the standards of the upper daily limits as if it were perfectly healthy to try to overload your body with a ton of vitamins and minerals all at once at their maximum allowable limit, that are not even food based for better absorption. The problem is, individual people have different needs/deficiencies. For instance, if your selenium level is fine, then taking it at 143% of daily dose for an extended period of time, can cause selenium poisoning especially if you are also getting it from your regular diet. She says that you can decrease the dose (or start with a smaller dose and build your way up) if you experience unpleasant side effects. The problem is, it might take you time to figure out why your hair started to fall out, why you suddenly feel exhausted, and why your experience tingling in your hands.Why should you experiment that way on yourself? And once you do figure out that the recommended daily dose of this supplement is too high for you, how will you know what is the "safe" dose for you?

Basically, I was looking for a book about nutrition, not about food supplementation. I didn't find this book to be easy to navigate or accessible.

Was hoping for more.

I guess I had higher expectations. I was hoping to get a little more guidance on which supplements balance you depending on which end of the spectrum your hormones lay. Instead it tells you how to have a balanced diet and pushing a priopriety blend supplement.

It is meant to help people not to pity or judge people with disabilities. I encourage all parents and people working with all children to read my story and understand that able or disabled, children become what we expect them to become. I never expected any less of my children because they had a disability. Having a child with a disability is hard but given the right attitude they will grow up and become active members of society

About the Author
Karen Stephenson began writing journals about her life with her twins at age twenty six when she found out she was pregnant with them. Life with the twins was completely different to what she had expected. The diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy at age two turned their lives upside down and sent her into an unknown ?special needs? world. Now twenty five years later she has completed an account of life with the twins and their disability. This is her first book. Karen has published numerous articles in various publications since their birth on various topics dealing with the twins and their disability. She lectures and facilitates workshops to parents and professionals on issues dealing with children and their disabilities. Karen lives in Waterloo, Ontario with her husband Jim and their two cats, Tar and Max. Desiree and Samantha both have their own apartments in Toronto, Ontario. Desiree has completed her post graduate diploma in Human Resource Management from Centennial College and is seeking employment. Samantha will start a PHD at OISE, University of Toronto in Sociology and Equity Studies with a focus on disability in September 2008.

A Must Read for those interested in Human Diaspora

This is a helpful read for those wanting to discover the possible origins of first peoples in the Americas. I think we tend to underestimate our ancestors capabilities.

Yes, some of the artwork evidence for an African presence in America is dubious, but what about evidence about plants that were possibly transfered back and forth. Also people were using water craft before 15,000 BP, so it is possible some people came here that way. The idea that the Bering Straight was the only way people got here needs to be reexamined.

African Traders and the Maya

[[VIDEOID:19793251]]This film shows pictures from Mayan text depicting African gods and merchants. Leo Wiener presents linguistic and iconographic evidence that Africans had intimate relations with the Mexican Indians. He provides information that the trade in Mexico and the religion of the Mayan and Aztec Indians was heavily influenced by Africans. Throughout the book and especially volume 3, Dr Wiener explains that these African were predominately Mande speaking people from West Africa.

This film provides information on the Mayan evidence of Pre-Columbian relations between Africans and the Mayan Indians. It shows that Dr. Wiener was right about a Mande influence among the Maya. It also provides a decipherment of the Mayan textual material by Dr. Clyde Winters of the Uthman dan Fodio Institute.
