Make Mine Fearless

I honestly can't say enough great things about this series! Cullen Bunn (Venom, Sixth Gun) continues the story of Valkyrie from Fear Itself: The Fearless as she needs to choose a new Valkyrior from Marvel's stable of heroines. Much like The Fearless, Cullen continues to weave a love letter to the Marvel Universe. Being a Marvel Zombie for 17 years now I love getting to read about these underused and underappreicated characters. This book needs more fans and I hope you'll give it a chance. Its very new reader friendly with incredible art and great writing to boot.

A very entertaining book.

I have to admit that I've been a fan of the Defenders since their first run. The book originally went from the concept of the strongest outsiders in the Marvel Universe (Namor, Dr. Strange, Hulk) to focus on a bunch of C and D list characters who couldn't support their own book (Valkyrie, Nighthawk, Red Guardian etc) who were a very ragtag team of individuals. The idea was tried (even just recently under Fraction) several times but the book never survived to stick with subsequent reboots.
I was instantly grabbed by the cover because it showed Valkyrie. A character who was from the original Defenders run and only recently started to get some focus in New Avengers and Fear Itself. Fearless Defenders can be described as worthy of The Defenders title. It's a very fun book that focuses on lesser known characters of the Marvel Universe but captures the chemistry they have. As soon as the book ended I was looking forward to seeing more of Misty Knight and Valkyrie's interactions.
It interjects itself nicely with humorous captions and the art is great. I was also a fan of the various covers for each issue collected. I did have to remind myself that Valkyrie isn't the same one from the original Defenders run when I found the change in her character off. I do want to praise the book for making me invested in the Asgardian adventure the book focuses on when I have never been a huge fan of Thor.

The potential is there...

I like Valkyrie, and I love the idea of an all-female team of heroes. However, I have never been satisfied with how her character has been written. I had hoped Fearless Defenders would give the character new life; and it almost does.
First off, Val’s always felt like a second run character. She’s extremely powerful, but she doesn’t face any of the powerful foes of the Marvel Universe. In this series, Valkyrie leads a team of female heroines. Therefore, she has to have her own female villain who leads a team of female villains. I don’t mind pulling a villain from a hero’s past – it worked with Captain Marvel. But this isn’t a character from the past. In fact, this first adventure feels like a retread. Valkyrie has failed to fulfill her mission to replenish the Shieldmaidens from among the worthy on Midgard. So, the Doom Maidens have risen to fill the void. Who are the Doom maidens? They are Valkyries gone bad. No, not the Disir. This is a different group of Valkyries gone bad. *sigh* Honestly, they couldn’t come up with a more original story?
While I wasn’t thrilled with the story or characterizations, the series does have potential. At one point, Valkyrie arranges to have all the major female heroes show up to battle the Doom Maidens. It was damn impressive seeing Black Widow, Captain Marvel, Storm, She-Hulk, Hell Cat, and a dozen more engage in battle. Further, the initial team line-up has some strong figures on it including Hippolyta, Dani Moonstar, and the new-to-me Misty Knight of the bionic arm. They could be so great together!
Overall, this series is weak compared to other Marvel Now titles, but it’s got enough potential to keep me reading. Recommended.
