He wasn't bored any more, that was the main thing. Plus the murder mystery, of course.

I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book. The character development between the main character and his daughter and his wife was well done. There was a nice balance between realism and humor. The love of the characters for each other even through the imperfections came through clearly. The age of the main character was portrayed honestly without being depressing. I read this book straight through and can't wait for the next adventure.

Worth a quick cozy read

Especially in the beginning, I have to admit the pace was slow, but I believe that the next books will have less central character development, a quicker pace, more twists and turns. The series has good potential.

I will be looking for the next book and I will purchase it, with GREAT hopes.

Lots of Humor and Heart

You don't have to be a baby boomer to like Stanley, the aging detective, but it helps. I'm encouraging all my reader friends to check out this book. The cover first caught my eye: It's beautifully nostalgic. I was also drawn because my protagonist, Rose McNichols, has a 95-pound black Lab named Chester who has a prominent role in every book. Old Age Private Eye is the perfect cozy mystery. The author writes in an intimate style that allows the reader to get to know the characters up close and personal. Loads of fun.

"This should be required reading for students in all healthcare fields as well as clinicians and social professionals, who deal with patients suffering from genital HSV and who want an overview of the topic. While covering much of the material in the AMA's CME booklet on genital HSV, it is more practical and easier to read. It also has a sense of compassion embedded in the writing. There are few such handbooks that are better written or cover medical topics any better. The author should be congratulated for this fine work."

At least 25 percent of the population has genital herpes. Even though most cases are mild or even cause no symptoms at all, the infection is incurable, recurs frequently, and carries a lifelong potential for transmission, often with profound effects on current sexual relationships and the formation of new ones. For these reasons, genital herpes is the sexually transmitted disease of greatest concern to sexually active young adults, aside from AIDS.

Unfortunately, many physicians view genital herpes as an infrequent and generally trivial condition, and one of the most common complaints of infected persons is that their doctors were insensitive and seemingly had little knowledge about the disease and its management. In fact, no other STD requires a more knowledgeable, caring, empathetic health care provider.

This booklet is intended to directly address these issues. The sine qua non of excellent patient care for any medical condition is accurate knowledge about it. Genital herpes is a complex disease, and I saw a need for a resource that fills the gap between the many excellent research papers and other scientific publications that are available, which by definition are limited in scope and technical in nature, and the few available full-length books that are too long for quick reading. "Genital Herpes" offers both a quick ride up the learning curve for the clinician who provides care to persons with STDs or at risk (i.e., almost all sexually active young persons) and a resource for persons who have herpes or are otherwise concerned about the disease.

The book is written primarily for health professionals, but most educated readers will find it useful in understanding the disease. For those who want to pursue more extensive research, the annotated references offer a wealth of information, including websites and other resources for both lay persons and health care providers.

I just got this book mailed to me and I guess I should have checked how many pages the book has. But yes it only has 43 pages and it is 27 dollars!! The pictures are incredible and I haven't started reading it so I don't know how the information is but this is just a warning for you that the book is not as thick as all.

About the Author

David Rohall (de-rohall@wiu.edu), received his Ph.D. in 2000 from University of Maryland-College Park, and is now Associate Professor of Sociology at Western Illinois University.  In addition to general courses in sociology, Dr. Rohall teaches courses in sociological social psychology, identity, and socialization.  His primary research interests lie within the social structure and personality perspective, including the study of how social structural conditions impact individuals' sense of self and their attitudes and beliefs about the world.

 

Melissa A. Milkie (mmilkie@socy.umd.edu) received her Ph.D. in 1995 from Indiana University, and is currently Professor of Sociology at the University of Maryland-College Park.  Her primary research interests, often framed within a symbolic interactionist perspective, include examining how cultural  ideals related to dimensions of stratification like gender, race, and social class influence the self-concept and mental health. Much of her recent work examines family and school contexts of children’s and adults’ mental health.

 

Jeffrey W. Lucas (jlucas@socy.umd.edu) received his Ph.D. in 2000 from the University of Iowa and is now Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Maryland-College Park. His primary research interest, centrally located within the group processes perspective, is the experimental analysis of theories of basic social processes.

Great read even thought it was for school.

I took a Social Psych course and it was actually really fun. I was a Computer Science student about 2 years ago. I took this class about 3 years ago and I still own the book and recommend my friends to read it. It's quite eye opening to learn what is socially constructed in your mind vs what is real in the context of yourself. I like to say this book changed my mind and my perspective on a lot of things in my life because it made me realize how certain external influences and social interactions construct the way I think and behave vs how I really want to think and behave. So I'm more of an individual and have a better sense of how I can decided who I want to be.

About the Author

Eugeniusz Rusiński graduated with a Master of Engineering Degree in Mechanics and Machine Design from the Mechanical Faculty of Wrocław University of Technology in 1975. In the same year he was hired as assistant lecturer at his alma mater and started his PhD program, which he completed in 1980 and was awarded the Doctor of Science degree. In 1990 the Board of the Mechnical Faculty of Wrocław University of Technology awarded him the degree of Habilitated Doctor of Technical Sciences in machine construction and operation, specializing in theory of machines and mechanisms, for his dissertation entitled Microcomputer analysis of frames and superstructures of vehicles and construction machinery. In 1993 he was promoted to the position of Associate Professor, and in 2001 to the position of Full Professor. In 1996 the President of Poland awarded him the title of Professor of Technical Sciences. He developed experience in Poland and abroad, among others, in Germany, USA, India, Austria and Cuba.

In 1994 he was elected head of the Department of Computer-Aided Design (CAD), which, under his leadership, was transformed in 2013 into the Department of Machine Design and Research of Wrocław University of Technology. From 1995 to 1998 he was Deputy Director, and then from 2000 to 2005, Director of the Institute of Machine Design and Operation. In the years 2005-2012 he was Dean of the Mechanical Faculty. In the years 2008-2016 he was Vice-Rector for Research and Cooperation with the Industry at Wrocław University of Technology.

He supervised nineteen doctoral dissertations. He is author of numerous scientific publications. He has received the Team Award of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland five times for

Jerzy Czmochowski graduated in 1978 with a master's degree in engineering from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Wrocław University of Technology. In 1985 he defended his doctoral dissertation entitled: “Stablity analysis of non-simply-connected three-layer plates using the finite element method", under the supervision of Prof. Franciszek Romanow. After completing his doctoral studies in 1982 he started work as senior assistant lecturer, and from 1989 to 2009 he was employed as research and teaching assistant professor at the Institute of Machine Design and Operation of WrUT. In 2008 he was awarded the degree of habilitated doctor by the Mechanical Faculty of Wrocław University of Technology. On November 12, 2009 he was appointed to the position of Professor of WRUT. He supervised two doctoral dissertations. His achievements include papers in the fields of fracture mechanics, diagnostics of emergency states, dynamics of surface mining machines, thermal and mechanical analysis of power industry equipment and strength analysis of load-carrying structures of machines. He received the Award of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland for outstanding scientific achievements in 1999 and in 2011. In 2010 he was awarded the Gold Cross of Merit.

Przemysław Moczko graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from Wrocław University of Technology, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. In October 1999 he started the PhD program in Design and Operation of Machines. The focus of his doctoral dissertation, which he defended in 2003, was on issues related to predicting the durability of elements of load-carrying structures. In 2015 he received the degree of habilitated doctor for his achievements in applying numerical and experimental methods in condition assessment and prediction of durability of load-carrying structures of machines and in monitoring the processes and condition of low-speed machines. He is also co-author of significant technical achievements: 1. The excavating unit cutting elements of surface mining machines. 2. Innovative fab wheel of the WPK-5.35 centrifugal fan. His scientific achievements are confirmed by numerous publications in national and international journals and by patents and pending patent applications. He also has the status of an international independent expert on assessment of designs of specialist mining equipment, their implementation and compliance with required standards.

Damian Pietrusiak graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from Wrocław University of Technology, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. In October 2009 he started the PhD program in Design and Operation of Machines. In 2013, he defended his doctoral dissertation entitled: "Assessment of the dynamics of load-carrying structures of bucket-wheel excavators with the application of modal analysis". Currently he is Assistant Professor at the Department of Machine Design and Research. In his scientific work he focuses on structural dynamics and statics of load-carrying structures as well as on the application of innovative engineering solutions in the heavy industry, the automotive industry and other sectors. He specializes in vibration and modal analysis with the use of numerical and experimental methods. He cooperates with different industries as contractor and manager of numerous research projects. He is an author of many research papers and patents/patent applications.
