Writing this memoir has entailed recording some very personal, intimate and emotional aspects of our lives. Sharing these with strangers does not come easily to me, but if I hadn't done so I would not have felt the book gave as full a picture as it is possible for me to give.

As with every action we have taken over the last four years, it ultimately boils down to whether what we are doing could help us to find Madeleine. When the answer to that question is yes, or even possibly, our family can cope with anything... nothing is more important to us than finding our little girl.

Gets bogged down in the detail

The story is well known. In May 2007, Kate and Gerry McCann and their three children went on holiday to a resort in Portugal, along with several friends and their children. The first few days of the holiday passed uneventfully, with the children spending most of their days in the kids club while the parents had tennis lessons and relaxed. In the evenings, the parents all got in the habit of leaving their children sleeping in their bedrooms while they dined in a nearby tapas restaurant, taking turns to go back and check on the children at regular intervals. Until one fateful evening when three year old Madeleine disappeared shortly after the 9pm check. The police were called, the media descended and the story became worldwide news.

This is Kate McCann's account of that holiday and the investigation that followed, based on the detailed diaries that she kept. The book captures the way she endlessly revisits the days before Madeleine's disappearance, looking for clues, wondering what errors of judgement she might have made. Madeleine had been very tired that night - could she have been drugged? Or just a worn out little girl on holiday? She had cried out the night before - was someone trying to get into the room? Or did one of the children simply have a bad dream? Was it a mistake to let the restaurant staff know that children were being left unattended in their bedrooms?

I can understand the way that you get lulled into the security of a holiday resort and forget that you are actually in a foreign country. Once Madeleine disappeared, this reality came home to the McCanns in a big way. Much as the French medical system was criticized after the death of Princess Diana, the Portuguese police procedures are criticized not just by the McCanns and their family, but by the British policeforce and media. Kate was frustrated by the absence of communication, by translation issues, the failure to interrogate more potential witnesses, the failure to follow up on promising leads.

I felt that the book could have done with a stronger editorial hand. There's a lot of detail, to the point that it gets overwhelming in parts, and it's not always coherently presented. For example she tells us that on the night in question their friend Matt did the 9.30pm check, but reported back that all was quiet. We don't find out until almost 100 pages later whether that meant that he went into the apartment at all, let along whether he visually checked the children. Witness sightings of men watching the apartment are also not mentioned until very late in the book.

However two things do emerge clearly: Kate's enormous guilt about what happened and her highly defensive personality. Every decision that she or Gerry made, whether it's about their parenting decisions or their quest to find their daughter, is justified. Looking around the internet and the way that every statement they make is endlessly scrutinized and judged partially explains that attitude. I suppose too, you would need to feel you'd made the best decisions that you could, or you'd go mad.

In the final chapters, Kate talks freely about how this entire experience has changed her and Gerry. The hate mail that she receives (letters that say "your daughter will be getting tortured and it's all because of you"). The dilemma she faces when her children misbehave in public and she feels she is being judged on how she interacts with them. Her guilt if she found herself enjoying anything.

In summary: an interesting read, but not as well written as I would have liked. Too long and it gets bogged down in irrelevant details. However it does give an insight into everything that the McCanns have gone through. If you dislike the McCanns, I'd advise giving it a miss: you are unlikely to feel differently about them from reading this book.

Repellent--takes no blame and too much information

As ever, she takes no blame for her child's disappearance, though she and her husband left three children--a three year old and two year old twins--alone in an unlocked holiday apartment every night of their vacation so they could go out to eat and drink with friends. You couldn't see the doors where they sat, and you couldn't hear the sounds of a child being abducted (or a child crying for her parents, which had happened previous nights of the holiday). It was much farther away than the back yard (the McCann's claim) and if you're in the back yard and the kids are asleep, do you leave the front door unlocked? They left the apartment unlocked "in case of fire". Right. Madeleine was going to usher her brother and sister to safety?

These are two doctors. They know that if they learned a patient or a patient's parent had done that, they'd have to report the parents to the police. And still Kate claims they did "responsible parenting."

Despite that, the disappearance isn't the parents' fault at all. And despite the fact that the British and Portuguese police found absolutely no evidence of an abduction but think Madeleine died accidentally in the apartment, the McCanns insist that she must have been abducted--even waking and going outside to look for her parents isn't a possibility. No, it's got to be some mean man there's no trace of--not a fingerprint, not a hair, not a fiber.

Perhaps a spot of knock-out meds so the kids wouldn't cry? Once the McCanns were back in the apartment, Kate kept sticking a finger under the twins' noses, according to her best friend, who was with them. "Still breathing? Or are you going to die too??"

Kate McCann claims that she wrote this to aid in the search and for her children to read. How reporting on her sex life and describing the parents' violent, horrific idea of what might have happened to Madeleine in the hands of a child molester are going to help the search is unclear. And the thought that Kate wrote the book for her children, as she claims? So they get to read about Mom and Dad's sex life, and a description of what a pervert might do that is unnecessary, graphic, and so shocking that it made me nauseated? No. No. No sane parent with any sensitivity or love for her children could have written that "for her children."

Fiction is what this is. I didn't pay for this rubbish. I downloaded a free copy.This book reconfirmed the parents guilt. If the dogs are so unreliable why are they being used again in Portugal to find Madeleines body? The Mcscams must carry on claiming Maddie is alive that way fools can keep donating to the fraudulent fund created minutes after the bogus abduction. These two so called parents are utterly transparent.

Heartbreaking, but trite

This is a tragic tale of child abuse by an adult survivor who had two sets of abusive parents. Their behavior was criminal. The writing is rough and the narrative rambles. Details are lacking. Interestingly, the writer often mentions the old classic A child Called It. My research strongly suggests his was a fabricated story that made Pelzer a millionaire many times over. I do not doubt Tuck's sincerity for a second, but this is not an engaging read. The story has been told many times and much better by others. The book seems more about launching a career as a lifestyle coach than drafting a memoir.

This book was written in a smooth, easy to read style. The action was believable and interspersed with details that added to the depth of the narrative. The pace was fast enough to keep me interested, and the characters well developed. Overall, a very good read.

Very interesting case

This is a pretty good true crime book, a thorough account of a fascinating, and tragic, killing in San Francisco. As these books usually do, this one walks the reader through the crime, the personalities involved, and the trial and sentencing. As the book progresses, the reader sees a wierder and more detailed portrait of the misfit lawyers and the violent convict at the heart of this case, and learns a bit about the breeding of vicious dogs.
Some of the morally indignant reviews below note that the book does not focus primarily on the innocent victim of this awful dog mauling, and they're right. It does not. For better or for worse, true crime books are primarily about crime and criminals.
As these things go, this book is interesting and informative, and will satisfy true crime buffs and those interested in this notorious case

Gripping and Disturbing--As It Should Be

In one sense, Red Zone is not an easy book to read: it is, as it ought to be, a gripping but profoundly disturbing story of frightening people engaging in shocking activities. The horrible attack by dogs trained to kill, the attack that caused the death of Diane Whipple, is terrible in its own right, and the reader cannot help but feel compassion for the innocent victim. But as Aphrodite Jones reveals in her book, there many more layers to the story than there seem at first to be.
As she examines the case, Jones quickly takes one into a world that, one suspects, most readers have never imagined and could never imagine: a world in which lawyers seem to lose their bearings and come under the influence of an apparently charismatic convict already in prison yet still engaging in criminal activities. That the criminal activities engaged in by Aryan Brotherhood member Paul Schneider and lawyers Marjorie Knoller and Robert Noel are by now fairly well known is due in no small part to Ms. Jones� book.
The story is presented in a clear and unaffected style that draws attention to the contents rather than to the writer. A tale of unfolding and deepening levels of horror, the book is also a readable and well-researched example of what good investigative reporting can uncover and deliver. I recommend this book. I have, in fact, recommended Red Zone in my college-level essay writing classes to students who are interested in researching current/recent events, as I have also recommended Ms. Jones� earlier book, All S/he Wanted.

Only if you are desperate

I give the book two stars only because it gave me just barely more insight than media provided over the course of the trial.
The most burning question I am left with is this: where was Ms. Jones' editor? In places the narrative reads like a high school essay, very self-conscious. Aphrodite considers herself a journalist, but she smears her personal bias all over the page. Another question: what, precisely, is the purpose of italicizing every single point she tries to make? Dumping research directly onto the page is also a lazy approach to reporting, something she reverts to several times.
The book really begins to unravel at the end, rambling from Knoller's testimony, to catty remarks about ADA Kimberly Guilfoyle-Newsom's wedding,and so forth. She throws in some PC fawning, at one point describing Sharon Smith as standing with her "beautiful lesbian friends." However, she shows her true colors when she suddenly attacks Smith by insinuation on page 292: "But authorities were well aware that Sharon Smith, for all her tears and courtroom drama, had long before moved on with her life...." and "No one who visited the Tiburon home ever bothered to notice whether Diane Alexis Whipple's green marble urn [these words were, of course, italicized] was present...." And the author wonders why neither Smith nor any of Whipple's friends or family spoke to her about Dianne?
I would have enjoyed seeing this story done by a true journalist, someone in the vein of Joe McGinnis or Jon Krakauer. One good thing I came away with: I now know I needn't waste my precious reading time with the likes of Aphrodite Jones.

Wonderful narration of a challenging journey

I found this book very engaging. The story narrative was especially impressive and gave a thorough understanding of not just the processes and management strategies that need to change as one transitions from projects to programs, but it also touched upon the work-life aspect and changes in managing ones own self during the transition. I also enjoyed the reflection section after the chapters to help grasp concepts. The interviews at the end of the book are also very stimulating.

After having been a project manager for years a first program to manage is quite a journey. It requires different skills and focus areas. Samir Penkar takes his readers through a personal journey. Benefit management, stakeholder engagement by talking instead of emailing and planning at a much higher level than he was used to is explored and explained. No, this is not a typical text book or teaching of a specific method, not at all. Follow Susan Codwell, Program Manager for FitAtWork Inc. in her struggles, leading and growing into the role of program manager. From Projects to Programs: A Project Manager's Journey is an easy to understand, readable story I could relate to. Each short chapter includes questions to reflect upon. I just completed reading the book. It is very engaging right from the first chapter. I read the entire book at one go. The book is unique in that no author has attempted a narrative story-telling style to describe program management practices like the way Samir has. Certainly a brilliant effort in my opinion.

About the Author
Gernot Minke has been lecturing for more than thirty-five years at the University of Kassel, Germany, where in 1974 he founded the Research Laboratory for Experimental Building (FEB Forschungslabor für Experimentelles Bauen). Apart from bamboo constructions his expertise in the area of sustainable building techniques extends to building with earth, strawbales, lowenergy and passive house constructions, and green roofs. He is also an independent architect and advisor for building ecology, and has been invited to more than 50 international conferences. Gernot Minke is the author of numerous books and has published more than 300 articles in journals and professional magazines. His previous volumes Building with Straw and Building with Earth were published by Birkhäuser as well.

Best book about bamboo construction

As I am building sustainable house and storage, this is the best book I never see in this field. To slect it I went to a design ressource center and check all books about bamboo. After I saw this one I deceide to buy it to keep it at home.

About the Author

Steve Cimorelli is an educator, speaker, and author in the field of materials and supply chain management. He holds a BS degree in industrial engineering from the University of Central Florida and is certified at the Fellow level by APICS in production and inventory management (CFPIM). He has more than 30 years of experience in manufacturing, engineering, materials, and supply chain management in a variety of industries, including aerospace and defense, industrial equipment, and commercial products. For the past 10 years, Steve has led and consulted with numerous distribution centers and manufacturing plants around the world, developing and implementing Lean manufacturing and materials excellence practices, especially in the areas of kanban, forecasting, line balancing, and production stabilization.

Mr. Cimorelli was first introduced to Lean manufacturing and just-in-time principles in the late 1980s while working toward his certification in production and inventory management (CPIM) with APICS, the Association for Operations Management. As he explains, "These ideas resonated so strongly with me that I began to actively seek opportunities to put them into practice. It wasn’t until 1995, when I joined Square D–Schneider Electric that I saw first-hand how they actually worked. From that point on, I became a vocal advocate and implementer of these practices throughout Schneider Electric and elsewhere through consulting work, teaching, and publishing."

His other published works include "Lean Six Sigma for a Leaner Supply Chain" in Driving Operational Excellence (Metaops Publishing, 2010), "Control of Production and Materials" in the Handbook of Manufacturing Engineering (Marcel Dekker, 1995), and two cover stories in APICS―The Performance Advantage magazine, "Reduced Demand" (2002) and "Anticipating the Reemergence of Demand" (2010). James William Fulbright (1905-1995), Arkansas senator from 1945 to 1975, emerges as a deeply contradictory figure in this engrossing, fairminded biography: an internationalist and opponent of McCarthyism and American involvement in the Vietnam War, he was also a staunch segregationist. The son of a hardheaded, Progressive-era businessman and a mother who, as a crusading journalist and reformer, took on the Arkansas political establishment, Fulbright developed a faith in rationality, progress and social engineering. He championed the United Nations, created the international academic exchange program that bears his name, advocated a land-for-peace deal as a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and did battle with "true believers" as he called McCarthyite anti-communists and white supremacists. Powerful chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (1959-1974), he eventually became a chief critic of the liberal internationalist cause he had espoused from the 1940s through LBJ's reign, arguing that it had allied itself with American imperialism and a wasteful military-industrial complex. An excellent biography.

I rarely read biographies, but purchased this one because I know the author, and after drinking a few glasses of wine at a book-signing reception for him, felt compelled to do so. I was fully prepared to be bored by a dry historical biography, but was surprised to find an engaging book instead.

About the Author

Maurice Naftalin is Director of Software Development at Morningside Light Ltd., a software consultancy in the United Kingdom. He co-authored the Generic Java standard that became the basis for generics in Sun's Java 5.0 and also contributed to the XQuery language standard base. Professor Wadler received his Ph.D., in computer science from Carnegie-Mellon University and co-wrote "Introduction to Functional Programming" (Prentice-Hall).

Excellent explanation of Java generics and its usage

The intent of Generics is make your Java code type-safer. While Java is a strongly typed language, it lacks type-safety when it comes to using collections. Generics were added to the Java programming language in 2004 as part of J2SE 5.0. Unlike C++ templates, generic Java code generates only one compiled version of a generic class. Generic Java classes can only use object types as type parameters -- primitive types are not allowed. Thus a List of type Integer, which uses a primitive wrapper class is legal, while a List of type int is not legal.

Part I of this book provides a thorough introduction to generics. Generics are a powerful, and sometimes controversial, new feature of the Java programming language. This part of the book describes generics, using the Collections Framework as a source of examples.

The first five chapters focus on the fundamentals of generics. Chapter 1 gives an overview of generics and other new features in Java 5, including boxing, foreach loops, and functions with a variable number of arguments. Chapter 2 reviews how subtyping works and explains how wildcards let you use subtyping in connection with generics. Chapter 3 describes how generics work with the Comparable interface, which requires a notion of bounds on type variables. Chapter 4 looks at how generics work with various declarations, including constructors, static members, and nested classes. Chapter 5 explains how to evolve legacy code to exploit generics, and how ease of evolution is a key advantage of the design of generics in Java. Once you have these five chapters under your belt, you will be able to use generics effectively in most basic situations.

The next four chapters treat advanced topics. Chapter 6 explains how the same design that leads to ease of evolution also necessarily leads to a few rough edges in the treatment of casts, exceptions, and arrays. The fit between generics and arrays is the worst rough corner of the language, so two principles are formulated to help work around the problems. Chapter 7 explains new features that relate generics and reflection, including the newly generified type "Class T" and additions to the Java library that support reflection of generic types. Chapter 8 contains advice on how to use generics effectively in practical coding. Checked collections, security issues, specialized classes, and binary compatibility are all considered. Chapter 9 presents five extended examples, looking at how generics affect five well-known design patterns: Visitor, Interpreter, Function, Strategy, and Subject-Observer. Part II is about the Java Collections Framework, which is a set of interfaces and classes in the packages java.util and java.util.concurrent. They provide client programs with various models of how to organize their objects, and various implementations of each model. These models are sometimes called abstract data types, and they are needed because different programs need different ways of organizing their objects. In one situation, you might want to organize your program's objects in a sequential list because their ordering is important and there are duplicates. In another, a set might be the right data type because now ordering is unimportant and you want to discard the duplicates. These two data types and others are represented by different interfaces in the Collections Framework, and there are examples of their use in chapter 10. However, none of these data types has a single "best" implementation--that is, one implementation that is better than all the others for all the operations. For example, a linked list may be better than an array implementation of lists for inserting and removing elements from the middle, but much worse for random access. So choosing the right implementation for a program involves knowing how it will be used as well as what is available.

This part of the book starts with an overview of the Framework and then looks in detail at each of the main interfaces and the standard implementations of them. Finally the book examines the special-purpose implementation and generic algorithms provided in the Collections class. The following is a list of chapters in part two:

Overall, this is a very good book on the subject of Java generics, and I highly recommend it.

Good, but could be better

Java generics are a welcome and important addition to the Java language, but because of their Erasure based implementation, they are somewhat limited and confusing to use.

This book is good in that it does cover many of the issues, and some interesting applications, but is I think limited in both explanations, and examples. Their section on Generics and Design patterns is a welcome one, but very short, and not very long on rationale or depth on other applications. If the examples they show is the only impact of generics on design patterns, something is wrong!

The standard Generics tutorials by Bracha and Langer, and the IBM DeveloperWorks series by Allen are more complete, and more descriptive, and free! I found the lumping of collections together with Generics ok, but a bit indicative that they ran out of real generics material. They are also IMHO a bit defensive on the long contested Erasure approach, but do explain their viewpoint well. They fault the C# and C++ approaches too quickly, noting the problems but not the corresponding solutions provided. Hopefully next versions of Java will (soon) provide reified versions of generics, it looks like it is in process now.

I did think it a worthwhile read, but not as much as expected.

Average, Nothing Exciting... not much more than its online alternative...

It's a decent reference and a great read to go over generics and the collections framework. But don't get me wrong, it's nothing you can't get from just reading the Sun-provided API documentation or tutorials covering the topics.

It's comprehensive, sure... but the examples lean to near overkill on each topic in some areas. In other areas, there just isn't enough information or example code to really drive home the ideas.

It's average and worth the read. Not worth keeping around, though. It's one of those "read-once-then-give-it-to-a-friend" books. Like I said, though: you should definitely read this book if you're looking for more information on these topics. You'll just find yourself hitting resources online for more information in areas you are particularly interested in (concurrency w/ collections, for example).
