Public school resegregation is a "national horror hidden in plain view," writes former educator turned public education activist Kozol (Savage Inequalities, Amazing Grace). Kozol visited 60 schools in 11 states over a five-year period and finds, despite the promise of Brown v. Board of Education, many schools serving black and Hispanic children are spiraling backward to the pre-Brown era. These schools lack the basics: clean classrooms, hallways and restrooms; up-to-date books in good condition; and appropriate laboratory supplies. Teachers and administrators eschew creative coursework for rote learning to meet testing and accountability mandates, thereby "embracing a pedagogy of direct command and absolute control" usually found in "penal institutions and drug rehabilitation programs." As always, Kozol presents sharp and poignant portraits of the indignities vulnerable individuals endure. "You have all the things and we do not have all the things," one eight-year-old Bronx boy wrote the author. In another revealing exchange, a cynical high school student tells his classmate, a young woman with college ambitions who was forced into hair braiding and sewing classes, "You're ghetto-so you sew." Kozol discovers widespread acceptance for the notion that "schools in ghettoized communities must settle for a different set of academic and career goals" than schools serving middle-and upper-class children. Kozol tempers this gloom with hopeful interactions between energetic teachers and receptive children in schools where all is not lost. But these "treasured places" don't hide the fact, Kozol argues, that school segregation is still the rule for poor minorities, or that Kozol, and the like-minded politicians, educators and advocates he seeks out, believe a new civil rights movement will be necessary to eradicate it.

Kozol has been one of the most relentless critics of educational and social inequalities in the United States. After 40 years, neither his energy nor his outrage appears to be exhausted. In turning his gaze to school segregation, he discovers what should be obvious to anyone who has spent time in public schools—they are more segregated than ever. Kozol’s research and reporting is so extensive that no one can challenge his conclusions: Separate is indeed unequal, and as a society we are robbing successive generations of poor, minority children of their only lifeline out of poverty. Kozol is, unfortunately, better at diagnosing the problem than prescribing a solution, but his optimism remains untempered.

Respected author Kozol delivers a scathing indictment of public education and the public policy that preserves inequities along race and class lines--producing, in effect, an apartheid educational system. Drawing on his experiences as a teacher in the 1960s and his 40 years spent working with children in inner-city schools, Kozol has a masterful overview of the public school system. For this book, he visited 60 schools in 30 districts in 11 states over a five-year period, gaining access to students and their teachers and parents, penetrating their thoughts, feelings, and circumstances. Within public school systems, wealthy parents have carved out niches of privilege for their children, pouring in funds to support supplemental programs in schools that are predominantly white. In contrast, schools populated by minority and low-income children suffer appalling physical conditions, inexperienced teachers, inadequate resources, and a curriculum so obsessed with accountability and behavior control that it takes the heart and soul out of teaching and learning. Kozol examines the nation's long and troubled history of relegating minority students to the worst schools and the disheartening and growing influence of American business on these schools, which slot children to training for low-status jobs and careers. Lamenting that the nation has given up on integration without ever having tried it, Kozol advocates another civil rights movement to reenergize the struggle for desegregation. About the Author

Carl Carmer, a Harvard-educated New York state native, was one of America's most popular writers during the 1940s and 1950s with thirty seven books, documentary films, his own radio program, and four albums of regional songs to his credit. He taught at The University of Alabama for seven years during the 1920s.

Howell Raines, an Alabama native and former New York Times editorial page editor and Pulitzer Prize winner, is the author of My Soul Is Rested: Movement Days in the Deep South Remembered and Fly Fishing through the Midlife Crisis.

Book of immense influence, still fresh after 65 years

Before Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land, Carl Carmer took a train from New York to Alabama to become a college professor, writing of a strange country he visited and returned from, as different as another planet for his known world. He roamed and wrote of the cornwhisky- swilling backwatersof Alabama and the rough-hewn urban centers like Birmingham during the 20s and early 30s -- the time of the Scottsboro boys, the Klux Klan in its first great revival, deep oral and cultural traditions among Alabama African Americans including the title, inspiration for the 30s pop song about a meteor shower more than a century before.. The Civil War veteran turned murderer of U.S. marshals and religious zealot -- lynched to avoid a trial and certain execution -- before Jim Jones and Waco.The great outlaws and train robbers, Rube Burrow and Railroad Bill, one white, the other black and so feared his body was displayed in several cities to prove he was dead. A period piece -- the N word is used-- it also paints a picture of a complex and diverse black community, its cultural and folk roots, its white relationships. Many Alabama natives, including this expatriate, would not know these tales but for Carmer who returned to New York to write about that state and area for decades more But his Alabama is Sleepy Hollow with a bite like "Two-toed Tom" the 15 foot gator trapped in a pond by stalkers only to find him surfacing in a nearby pond, devouring a 12 year old child, decades before scientists learned of the ancient underwater tunnels of the reptiles. Tom moved on to become a legend in Florida where he's still talked about just as Carmer's retelling of the great tales lives on in Alabama, too often without his name attached. Sometimes a bizarre mixture of charm and horror, and perhaps a bit of hyperbole, Stars Fell on Alabama is one of those Academic reprints that reminds us the past is never so simple as we might dream and that the man with manners is to be as feared as the trainrobber with a gun

Alabama's "Gone With the Wind???"

Reading "Stars Fell on Alabama" brings to mind lines from the opening scenes of "Gone With The Wind," lines that said something like "look for them (these days)no more because they are gone with the wind..." The same could be said of the Alabama described in Carl Carmer's book.

The days of Margaret Mitchell's classic "Gone With the Wind" never really existed, at least not in the romanticized way in which she wrote about them, but the days described in "Stars Fell on Alabama" did happen. They did, unfortunately, exist, but thankfully, for the most part, they, too, are noe "gone with the wind..."

This book is about life, a cross section of real life in the terribly rural South from about 1921 through 1927. It was not a pretty time or an easy time, and these are not quaint, pretty sketches of life during that time. The innocent, naive and politically correct reader of today might find parts of this book, most of it actually, quite offensive. And rightly so. But these times, these days and these ways, did exist. And they put life in today's Alabama into perspective.

It is clear to a reader living in Alabama that the state has progressed far more in the last 75 years (1930-2005) than it did in the 75 years immediately after the Civil War (1865-1940). That may be true for the country as a whole, but it is especially true for Alabama. Many intellectuals and scholars cite this book as one of the points at which this progress began. As Howell Raines writes in his introduction (added in 1990) this book was one of the first times Alabamians read about themselves as others saw them. It was not a pretty picture, not all bad not all ugly, but for the most part, it was not how Alabamians felt about themselves and not how they wanted their state--and themselves--to be perceived by those outside the state. To be sure, there was some beauty among the thorns, but it was a racist time and the thorns greatly outnumbered the rosebuds. There are no memories of the grand and glorious "Lost Cause" in these pages. Any and everything but.

Speaking of Howell Raines' introduction, it would be far more useful and appropriate as an Afterword or Epilogue. In this book it would be better to put what you have read in perspective than to write about what you are going to read. That's not true for all books, but it is true for this book.

In the hours after finishing "Stars Fell on Alabama," two thoughts come to mind again and again:

--"We may not be where we ought to be, but, thank God and by the grace of God, we aren't where we used to be..."

--And this book was obviously written before football took over the University of Alabama (where Carmer taught for six years) and the state as a whole. Football is never mentionied, either during his time in Tuscaloosa, or in his travels around the state. Not once. In that respect, life in Alabama has certainly changed. But even now, there are racial overtones in the rivalry between Alabama and Auburn. But that is another story for another time.

If you are from Alabama, live in Alabama,or want to learn about the rural South as it was in the twenties and thirties, read the book. You will learn from it and you will enjoy it. Stars Fell On Alabama

To properly understand history, you must be able to accept all aspects of your topic, good, bad, and all shadings in between, as sources of information and for enrichment of your knowledge. History rarely conforms to our personal view of the world, for there are so many factors which are beyond our control. So it is with Stars Fell on Alabama. The South was no friend to anyone but itself, and this book gives the reader, no matter what their background, an honest, sometimes raw, sometimes fantastic, sometimes poignant, picture of what a part of the South was like for everyone, black and white, and that is its value to anyone who read it and especially to anyone who uses it to teach about the South.

About the Author
SUSAN MATHESON grew up in Nova Scotia with a passion for baking. Eventually, she trained as an architect in Canada and England, and has maintained a private practice in both Manhattan and London for the past fifteen years. She specializes in building and renovating houses in historic districts.

LAUREN CHATTMAN is a cookbook author and former professional pastry chef who has written nine books, including, most recently, Icebox Cakes. She has also collaborated with former White House pastry chef Roland Mesnier on Dessert University and with Daniel Leader on Local Breads. Her recipes have appeared in Food & Wine, Bon Appétit, Cook’s Illustrated, the New York Times, Metropolitan Home, Family Circle, and Redbook, and she has appeared on the Today show and QVC. She lives with her husband and two daughters in Sag Harbor, New York.

Very thoughtful and thorough

My latest book acquisition arrived today and I am so excited. Last year we designed and built a gingerbread house using the instructions from "The Professional Pastry Chef" and it was much more complicated than I had anticipated. Not hard, just complicated. Planning a design for even a simple A-frame house was very tedious, making sure everything would line up and the roof would overhang and everything. Then decorating: what candy to buy, how to use it effectively. It came out cute, but doing it again was daunting.

I'm not blown away by any of the designs I see in "The Gingerbread Architect", but I am impressed by their thoroughness. They've planned out the steps, day by day, into reasonable chunks of work; they list exactly the ingredients and candies you need to recreate their designs; they have templates for exactly the pieces you need to cut out, to scale; they list alternate ideas and decor, how to adapt the style, and pitfalls they had with certain designs or decor choices. And I was impressed with some of their creative use of materials, particularly decorating with upside down ice cream cones for trees and green rice krispy treats for shrubberies.

All in all, I feel a lot more sanguine about tackling this holiday craft with this book in hand.

Well, it is Christmas day and I'm still not done with this project. Where on earth do you buy hard candies these days? The recipes for the dough and the icing were similar to others I've used (Bo Frieburg) and the directions were easy to follow. I had a snafu with the pattern pieces; I had absolutely no idea that 400% larger was so big, and neither did the folks at Kinkos. With the size of the Kinkos bill, I think the pattern pages could have been laid out more efficiently. In the end, I threw out the Kinkos copies anyway, because a gingerbread house over 14" tall would overwhelm my dining room. I resized the pages to only 300% and went from there.

Cut out, baking, and assembly have been moderately straightforward. I chose to do the Victorian on the book cover (my son picked it) which is a medium difficulty plan. The directions did NOT point out that I shouldn't have cut out the doors, which is annoying, since I then had to cut separate door pieces and tack them on. It was also unclear exactly how much crushed candy should be added to the window spaces and my windows look thin and lumpy.

Altogether, however, it is a very handsome house and I would never have designed such a complex house on my own. My son is thrilled to bits, the air smells like gingerbread, and I didn't have to think of all the details myself. Compared to a ready-to-make kit, making a gingerbread house from scratch is a labor of love (and money). But this book did do a nice job of setting it out, step-by-step, and taking away the guesswork.

A great YA novel.

I read this novel for the first time probably twenty years ago. At the time I was probably 12 or 13. I had never been in love, never had a kiss, let alone a boyfriend but through books I was able to experience all of the things I imagined me peers were doing. Of course, all of this fantasy left me sorely disappointed with my subsequent teenage experiences!

What I loved the most about this book was the heartache and longing it created in me. The book takes us through the high school years of Ellen as she pines for a boy she seemingly cannot have and does not love her back. I remember feeling the pain, heartache and depression that she felt. It was as if I'd developed a crush on the unattainable Michael myself. I remember turning the pages, hoping for a happy ending.

The story made such an impression on me, many years later I searched for and found a copy on Amazon. I've probably read it three times in the last three years. There's something about the longing and the inevitable happy ending that brings me back to it time and again.

Review of the story: the girl spent the whole time obsessing over a guy in the book and was miserable because of him the whole time. I can't believe this was one of my favorite books as a teenager :). No issues with the delivery from the seller.

Excellent value for new practitioners

If you're just starting out as an NLP practitioner, or have been working for a while but not getting quite the results you'd hoped for, this is an excellent addition to your book collection. Packed with plenty of practical advice from business practicalities to working with clients, it is well-written and informative. Unlike many "cheap" Kindle books, this one really does offer value for money and more. Best $2.99 I've invested in a long time.

This book should be given to every student of NLP. There's a need for clear direction of what to do after becoming a licensed NLP practitioner and Murielle provides that guidance. It's extremely well-written with plenty of examples and practical info. It's one of those books which you will keep going back to as a reference guide.

David Weisburd is Walter E. Mayer Professor of Law and Criminal Justice at the Hebrew University Law School in Jerusalem, and Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is the author or editor of eleven books and more than sixty scientific articles that cover a wide range of criminal justice topics.

Anthony A. Braga is Senior Research Associate in the Program in Criminal Justice Policy and Management at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. His research focuses on working with criminal justice agencies to develop crime prevention strategies to deal with gang violence, illegal firearms markets, and violent crime hot spots.

Cuando inicié la escritura de La izquierda reaccionaria, yo me consideraba un hombre de izquierda. ¿Qué significa esto? ¿De qué manera se es de izquierda si uno es honesto? Del mismo modo en que se es católico o budista: asumiendo por entero una larga tradición, que para el caso incluye los crímenes, las disidencias, las desviaciones, las recreaciones y hasta el modo de concebir la historia.

Dicho de otro modo: la lucha de clases como motor de la historia, los veinte millones de muertos de José Stalin, la aprobación de los créditos de guerra por la socialdemocracia alemana para iniciar la Primera Guerra Mundial, el genocidio de Pol Pot, la destrucción de Cuba --que en 1959 no era el burdel que suele pintarse, sino uno de los países más avanzados y cultos de América, con una de las tasas de alfabetización más altas del mundo--, la represión del levantamiento de Kronstadt en 1921 por Leon Trotski, el tradicional antisemitismo de la izquierda «pobrista» o atrasista; y, para colmo, la pretensión de poseer una explicación «científica» para todo ello.

Todo eso era y es el ser de izquierda, o todo eso hay que asumir, por pura dignidad, si se aspira a autodefinirse así.

Verá el lector que en alguna parte de la obra reivindico para mí esa condición, la de hombre de izquierda, a pesar de todo. Pero en realidad, el proceso mismo de la escritura, la exposición sistemática de las taras de la izquierda, me estaba apartando de ese espacio.

Los lectores lo entendieron mejor que yo, tanto los que me siguieron como los que me condenaron. Había empezado a escribir en la izquierda y había terminado en otro sitio, que no era la derecha, ni el liberalismo tal como se había ejercido hasta la fecha.

Como en toda catarsis, salí transformado en algo desconocido, algo que yo mismo no podía nombrar, porque lo mismo que había hecho con la izquierda, su disección --sin entender al principio que mi objeto de estudio era un cadáver--, podía hacerlo con la derecha, con la Iglesia católica o con cualquier otra concepción abarcadora a la que me enfrentara, y en cualquier caso iba a tener que asumir un pasado, una tradición, una serie de horrores.

About the Author
Joseph Campbell was interested in mythology since his childhood in New York, when he read books about American Indians, frequently visited the American Museum of Natural History, and was fascinated by the museum's collection of totem poles. He earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees at Columbia in 1925 and 1927 and went on to study medieval French and Sanskrit at the universities of Paris and Munich. After a period in California, where he encountered John Steinbeck and the biologist Ed Ricketts, he taught at the Canterbury School, then, in 1934, joined the literature department at Sarah Lawrence College, a post he retained for many years. During the 1940s and '50s, he helped Swami Nikhilananda to translate the Upanishads and The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna. The many books by Professor Campbell include The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Myths to Live By, The Flight of the Wild Gander, and The Mythic Image. He edited The Portable Arabian Nights, The Portable Jung, and other works. He died in 1987.

This book is a massive summary, comparison of, and commentary on oriental mythology. It is divided into 3 major parts: Western Oriental mythology, Indian mythology, and the mythologies of the Far East. Campbell's incredible scholarship is very impressive, and rather overwhelming at times. He obviously had a great familiarity with the mythologies and religions of practically all areas of the planet. However, his explanations for general readers of foreign mythologies weren't always clear, as evidenced in this book. Much of this book focuses on developing the idea that Oriental mythologies had one major origin, in the Egypt of the Pharaohs. According to Campbell, traces of the religion and mythologies of the Pharaohs, as well as implements of their material culture, could subsequently be found in every major culture heading eastward, from Persia to India, from China to Japan.
This idea is not exactly clear in the beginning of the work, and the initial chapters about the Pharaohs start with a jerk, leaving some readers wondering "Why start here, so far west?" The idea is stated more and more explicitly as the book progresses, so that by the time we reach the Chinese section, Campbell writes about the "primacy of the West-to-East cultural flow". Later in the same section, Campbell writes "the question of the impact of sentiments and ideas carried from one domain to another, which is basic to our study, is ...well illustrated by the annals of the settlement of Buddhism in China..." Is there really enough evidence to support the idea of a single common mythology that spread from West to East? Is this theory accepted by modern specialists in mythology? A reader who comes to this book independently of a class or other mythology background can only speculate on these questions.
Campbell does a masterful job of laying out similarities across cultures, such as his description of the "archetypal Savior Biography", where he lists the following elements (among others):
--scion of a royal line
--miraculously born
--amid supernatural phenomena
--of whom an aged holy man prophesies a world-saving message
--whose childhood deeds proclaim his divine character
--engages in arduous forest disciplines
--which confront him with a supernatural adversary
He points out that this list applies to the Jains, Buddhists, as well as Christians, and, if I read him correctly, presents it as one piece of evidence for linkage between Western and Oriental mythologies.
The lucidity of Campbell's descriptions and summaries of myths vary. Sometimes he quotes stories or myths at great length. But other times, he passes over the details quickly with such statements as "We need not rehearse the legends of his miraculous birth..." in his haste to get to commentary about the stories in question. For newcomers to the topic, this can be somewhat of a disappointment, since the commentaries are difficult to understand if one is not already familiar with the stories, and it is to learn about the stories themselves that some readers pick up this book. The book itself seems to have developed from Campbell's notes. Thus, there is considerable explicit enumeration of points, as well as the occasional sentence fragment. This style of writing requires very active study from a reader who is determined to wrestle the kernel of meaning from Campbell's words.
The one disappointing chapter was the chapter on Tibet, which actually includes only a few paragraphs about the mythology of Tibet. The remainder of the chapter is a brief collection of ideas from Maoist communism, juxtaposed with stories of atrocities during the Chinese takeover of Tibet. While the story of Tibet is indeed extremely lamentable, perhaps these details would better fit in a political description of Tibet in order to make more room for an overview of Tibetan mythology.

Uneven but fascinating commentary

"Oriental Mythology" is the second in the "Masks of God" series, the follow up to "Primitive Mythology". It covers more of the mind boggling extent of humankind's mythic past, material that is the basis for religion and philosophy. Campbell presents all sorts of details from artifacts dug up by archeologists and some rather long-winded quoted passages. Much of it is rather uneven and challenging to follow, but the payoff is usually Campbell's own commentary which often uses a soaring language to elucidate, to associate and connect different myths of different cultures.

The especially fascinating part of the book for me concerns the mystery of how yoga philosophy and practice came into being and evolved as it did to different forms such as Buddhism and Hinduism. Yoga philosophy defines a very different state of being than the Abrahamic tradition of the West. It does not situate humankind in a state of sin and guilt, stranded in a corrupt world, alienated from a transcendent God; but rather, in a state of ignorance with knowledge as the key to escaping from inevitable suffering caused by the delusion of living in a material world. The ancient civilization in the Indus Valley contains seeds of it's development, but it is far from clear just how it developed and what role the Aryans, who invaded and plundered India, played. In any event, Campbell concludes "tentatively" that yoga is "indigenous" to India.

The many different forms and manifestations of Buddhism follow from the ancient yoga tradition of asceticism. The book is not an good introduction to Buddhism, and it can be difficult to distinguish between the many sects and their different metaphysics and practices. It's influence burgeoned and then waned in India, but spread throughout the Far East, and combined with the Native nature religions of Tao in China and Shinto in Japan. Though Buddhism in whatever form mainly involves a turning away from the affairs of the world, from what is shown here, it has hardly ever failed to provide a civilizing influence.

I have to echo some of the criticisms of other reviewers. The inclusion of a chapter on ancient Egypt and also a section on the hieratic city states of Mesopotamia do not go the way of clarifying how Oriental myth grew as it did. The organization of the book would have been a lot more straightforward if he had gone directly from the introduction, in which Campbell compares East with West, to ancient India and directly to the mysteries of the Orient. He seeks to trace the influence of Egypt and Mesopotamia to the East, but the influences are so scattered and so relative, that it would have been better to have stuck with India, China, and Japan. Also, the final section on Tibet, although illuminating, departs in large measure from the subject matter.
