Can't Always Get What You Want, by Chelsey Krause

Fans of Jill Shalvis and Molly O’Keefe will love this deeply romantic and uplifting debut novel about losing everything you thought you wanted—and getting exactly what you need.

Sophie Richards has been looking forward to a much-needed girls’ night out: a Rolling Stones tribute-band concert, a few drinks, a distraction from her grueling nursing shifts in acute care. But when her best friend bails, Sophie gets stuck with a blind date.

Although Brett Nicholson may be the hottest carpenter alive, and Sophie may technically be single, she isn’t exactly on the market. Six years ago she found The One. He was everything Sophie dreamed a man could be—and then she lost him. In an instant, her whole life changed, and she forgot all about happily ever after.

But as she gets to know Brett, Sophie starts to wonder about the future for the first time. With a broken heart still clouding her mind, jumping into a new relationship feels impossible. When she’s in his arms, walking away feels even harder. Now Sophie faces an impossible choice: living in the past or choosing love in the here and now.

Unlikeable Heroine

This book was all over the map for me. On one hand, I loved the concept. Girl tragically loses her first love and can't get over him. Finally meets someone who she clicks with and must deal with her issues in order to move forward with her life. So many real-life great lessons to be learned from this story. On the other hand, I felt the writing was stilted and I absolutely did not like the main character no matter how much I wanted to like her!

Sophie is a nurse, and it's obvious from the very beginning that she doesn't really like her job. This was a very hard thing for me to adjust to as my sister is a nurse and I've had many close family members with chronic diseases that have relied on nurses. Being a nurse is not a pleasant job and it is not for everyone. It is my deep down belief that it is not a profession one should undertake unless it's their calling. First chapter and already strike one for Sophie.

Then there is her maturity level. I believe she is supposed to be closing in on 25. Now, my feelings on this may well be due to the fact that I got married at 18 and was the mother of 2 by the time I was her age. But it just seems the maturity level of Sophie is written the same in her flashbacks to when she was 19 and the present. Every person I know went through a HUGE personal growth in those years. And somehow I don't think this was an intentional thing the author did to make a point. I think she just didn't know how to write the subtlety of the two different ages.

Now we're going to get more into the actual author than the character of Sophie. There are so many times in this book that obvious things are pointed out by Sophie. It makes the character come across as insecure. Again, I don't think this is intentional on the author's part. I actually felt as though the author's insecurities in her writing ability were coming across in Sophie's actions. Pointing out why Brett keeps coffee in his freezer, her giggling about Aaron's pet name for her, putting in an aside about their Three Items game as if the reader can't figure out what she had in mind. It was frustrating and something I would think to find in a much younger geared novel, like early teenager. Frankly, for anyone over 15 it's almost insulting. Yet the author leaves the reader guessing about the coconut during a wedding ceremony, something the average person would have to look up if they weren't into Hinduism.

Which actually brings me to the wedding preparations. That was so wrong to me in so many ways. Sophie had virtually no idea what the heck was going on for her best friend's wedding...a wedding where she was maid of honor! And somehow she had not only not met her best friend's crazy aunt, but had never even heard about her?!? They've been best friends for like 20 years. Sure, it's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things when it comes to the actual story. It's just a little detail that niggles at my brain.

Being a woman, there were quite a few things in the book that made my "Woman's Lib" flag want to pop out. But being from the United States, I honestly don't know if there are different regulations in Canada. I live in the Detroit area so have been to Canada numerous times, but I know there are differences that I can't see from a quick trip to a museum or casino there. The way the doctor at the hospital treated Sophie and the other nurses would have been reported to HR in a heartbeat around here. And the interactions between them toward the end, she just rolls over and takes it! I am not litigation happy, but get a backbone! Whether a person likes their job or not, to have someone mistreat you and spread lies and rumors is just not right. So this, on top of Sophie always worrying about her ugly work clothes and calling other women names, left a bad taste in my mouth.

As for Brett, I mostly adored him. And Aaron, too. What I couldn't understand is why these great, loving, caring guys fell for Sophie so hard. She is really never portrayed as a nice person. Brett did some unforgivable things that almost ruined him in the end. And once again, I think it was the inexperience of the author that made it seem that way. There were other ways these scenes could have played out that could have conveyed the same message without making him the bad guy.

I feel as though I've been picking on the author. In a way I have. She has a great concept and some of the characters are wonderful. With a few tweaks this could be an awesome book. So maybe between the time I'm writing this review and the actual publication date some of these problems will be addressed. If so, my rating could easily be bumped up to a 4-star. As it stands right now, it's lucky to get 2 stars. I will say, the growth we (finally) see from Sophie at the end was a breath of fresh air after going the whole book with no growth. There's potential there yet!

HLB Reviews Can't Always Get What You Want
By Home. Love. Books.
I liked the synopsis of this book. I think it's because I think everyone can identify with having a first love, the one you thought you were going to spend your life with. Some of us actually get to spend the rest of our lives with that person, but for most people it doesn't turn out that way. I liked the idea of this book because Sophie thinks she has already found her "one" and it didn't work out, so starting something new is hard for her, and I wanted to see how that evolved.

I think Sophie avoids fully living live after losing her first love. But one night she ends up on a blind date with Brett. Sophie and Brett have a lot in common, and they have this great kind of banter between them. It's also just so easy between them, that you know from the beginning that the two of them just make sense together, and you want the two of them to end up together. All signs point to them being good together and getting their happily ever after.

Only its not that easy. Of course it's not that easy. Sophie still lives in her head just a little too much, and she really holds herself back from Brett. So much so that the book really doesn't feel like a romance so much as the journey of Sophie with romance as a secondary storyline. There is so much time spent on Sophie's inner monologue and everyday life that it really slows the pace down of the book and I think detracts from the evolution of Brett and Sophie.

I really did understand where Brett was coming from during the course of the book. He felt like Sophie was holding back from him and living so much in the past, and she was. I easily understood when this kind of behavior hurt him, or he felt like he needed to take a step back. But Brett is literally such a good guy. He's the kind of guy anyone would want to be with. There was more than one occasion when I wanted to take Sophie by the shoulders and shake her for not being able to see what was right in front of her eyes.

Ultimately, I think this was a decent book. The writing style was nice, I just thought that the pace of the book was just way to slow. It made the book feel so much slower than I think the length of book reflects. This was a solid first time author effort though, and I would be more than willing to read any future endeavors by the author.

Heartbreaking & Heartwarming At The Same Time
By Sherri_Hunter
Can’t Always Get What You Want is the debut title from up and coming author, Chelsey Krause. We meet Sophie Richards who is a nurse, but struggles in her career choice. She’s not a bad nurse, but you get a sense that her heart really isn’t in it. After her best friend bails on going to see a Rolling Stones tribute band, Sophie finds herself on a blind date. Sophie immediately feels a connection with Brett, but she is still heartbroken from losing the love of her life six years ago. Sophie finds herself facing the very difficult choice of whether she wants to try for happily ever after with Brett or keep her heart locked away.

I always know a book is going to be outstanding when I get pulled into the story from the very first page. This book made me laugh out loud immediately, but what really makes it truly extraordinary is the way Ms. Krause creates characters the reader feels a strong connection with. As a reader, it is so important to me to really care about the characters, what they have gone through, what they are currently doing and where they are headed. Ms. Krause does an excellent job of taking the reader into Sophie’s life. Instead of putting us into information overload with all of the events that brought Sophie to where she is when we meet her, Ms. Krause takes us gradually through the process. I really enjoyed this because I got to see it through Sophie’s eyes as if I was there with her. It gave me a better understanding of what she went through and how it shaped her into the person she becomes and the person that Brett meets.

Along with the many laugh out loud moments, there were many moments of tears that made me want to read more and find out what happened in Sophie’s past and how it was affecting her future. There were also moments of anger at Aaron’s mother and Dr. St. Luke. They were both very difficult and unlikable characters and I enjoyed how Sophie responded differently to both.

This was such a well-written story. The author draws on her own personal nursing experience to make Sophie’s actions relevant and believable. The story moved at a very good pace, giving me time to process what was going on instead of getting lost in the details. As a fan of the Rolling Stones, I loved that each chapter is a song title and how their music plays such an important role in Sophie’s choices.

I wanted to be angry at Brett for making Sophie choose. Initially, I felt he was being unfair and selfish, but this story really focuses on forgiveness so I forgave him. Sophie has to find a way to forgive herself before she could move on in her life and live the life she is meant to. Sometimes, we have to be nudged, and not in a subtle way, before our eyes are opened.

My Final Verdict: If you are looking for a story that will pull on all of your emotions, filled with characters you feel a strong connection to, run, do not walk to your nearest book retailer and get this book. Not many people have the chance to find true love more than once in their lives and this story gives us a first row seat to see it happen. Kudos to Chelsey Krause for the many hours of laughter and tears. I will never look at Oreo cookies the same way again and I will be looking for more from this talented author.
