About the Author
Tarry Lindquist was an enthusiastic presenter and master classroom teacher who worked extensively with both students and teachers in grades K-8. She had more than thirty years of teaching experience both in the United States and overseas. She was a regular presenter with Heinemann Workshops and the Bureau of Education and Research, and was known for the innovative and practical content of her teaching. Tarry was recognized as Elementary Teacher of the Year by the National Council for Social Studies, and as a national Good Neighbor award winner by State Farm. She wrote three Heinemann books: Seeing the Whole Through Social Studies, 2nd edition; Ways That Work: Putting Social Studies Standards into Practice; and Social Studies at the Center: Integrating Kids, Content, and Literacy (with Doug Selwyn).

Surprisingly Good!

I was forced to buy this book for a graduate class and was very pleased with what I received. The author fills the book with useful information, tips, and advice for future (or current) teachers, and keeps the reader engaged. This book is NOT like the general textbook that most people hate to read! The in-book examples (pictures) are very helpful as well. Great book and worth the money for any teacher who is planning on teaching social studies to younger grades!

The voice of a classroom teachers comes through clearly.

Seeing the Whole Through Social studies is an important addition to the teaching of social studies. It is clear that Tarry Lindquist is a master teacher; she teaches her children and she teaches her readers. A teacher in any stage of his/her career can find exciting new ways of presenting ideas to kids here. althouhg it is aimed at elementary school, it is equally valuable for middle school teachers. If you have only one book in social studies methods, this is the one. If you have two books, choose Ways that Work, her new addition to the field of teaching social studies. As you read her voice, you hear the clear voice of a classroom teacher.
