Highly recommended new publication on plagiarism and source use

Diane Pecorari’s new book ‘Teaching to Avoid Plagiarism: how to promote good source use’ is an important new publication in the literature on plagiarism and source use in HE. She draws on her considerable experience and research to urge academic staff to re-think plagiarism and source use, and approach them more proactively and positively. The book provides an in-depth view and discussion of important, and sometimes overlooked areas of plagiarism, as well as many practical activities to encourage readers to think about their own responses and their own institution. A strength of the book is thus that it reaches out to staff working different contexts, globally and within institutions, rather than confining itself to the author’s context.
The book is divided into three main parts. Each chapter in the first two parts poses a question about plagiarism for the reader to consider. Part 1 covers the central issues of defining plagiarism, deciding why it happens, and how universities and teachers respond to it, and the problems in these three areas. Part 2 is dedicated to the learning and teaching context, and how to manage plagiarism. Finally, part 3 shifts to contextualising plagiarism and considers international students, differences between disciplines, issues of diversity and plagiarism in its current, broader context. At the beginning of each chapter, a summary helps the reader to know where it is going. The reader is also given a learning outcome of what they will be able to understand or do at the end of the chapter, which gives them a clear sense of development. Each chapter ends with an activity, often to debate with colleagues.
I think that any reader with an interest in plagiarism and source use will have their own ‘eureka!’ moments while reading this book, when they finally ‘get it’, and understand something about plagiarism or see a way of approaching it that they did not have before. I found chapter eight on the disciplinary differences of source use and plagiarism issues especially enlightening. It delves into many issues related to differences in disciplines with source use and plagiarism, such as the absence of quotations and reliance on formulaic language in scientific writing, and opens up a debate on how to address these differences in teaching and in policies. The case studies at the end of the book are also very interesting and thought-provoking: for example, if a student has plagiarised their work all through their degree and is only found out at the end, who is actually responsible?
The author discusses many of the emerging trends in plagiarism such as pluralizing plagiarism as a debate, plagiarism management, more questioning of issues about international students, the use of textmatching software, how plagiarism should be taught and how students should be informed. Above all, she draws attention to the importance of understanding what good source use is and how to teach it. Pecorari makes the shortcomings of the present system clear: current plagiarism policies tend to focus on what not to do and the penalties associated with it, while instruction about source use tends to be confined to referencing guides. What is missing is how to do all the subskills of source use, which include finding, selecting, reading, understanding, relating to other texts and the disciplinary area, constructing a text, drawing on sources in different ways, using disciplinary and rhetorical knowledge.
Some of the activities are geared especially towards thinking about plagiarism within a subject, for example ‘supply students with a text which you consider to be a good example of source use in your discipline’. This makes the task useful and relevant to a student’s context, but as a lecturer of generic EAP, I found I needed to think how to adapt such activities to my multi-disciplinary setting.
One of the problems Pecorari addresses is that subject tutors may not want to teach source use, perhaps because they do not know how. Through the activities in the book, she shows lots of innovative ways to teach it in different contexts - in the classroom, within staff discussion, or as part of staff training – and thus helps educators get to the point of being confident about teaching source use.
Overall, this book will be very useful for anyone researching, teaching and addressing plagiarism and source use in HE.

This book was extremely difficult for me to read considering the circumstances Novel was constantly put through... It shows you how you should be appreciative of things in life and how you shouldn't allow the lows that life sometimes throws our way dictate and control our future. As we watched Novel grow into this new woman, we seen through men like Lance and Truth that there are angels here on Earth. I appreciated this story because we got to look at some really good men besides her step father and was shown the worth of REAL men and it goes to show you that women are not the only ones who can change young women. Lance showed Novel her worth and I'm so happy to have gotten the opportunity to come across this story... Makes me want to share my own experiences through paper... Good job Ms. Green! Kudos!

No More Pain

Novel, went through so much, I was rooting for her the whole time. If you don't want to get emotionally attached then this book, isn't the one for you. Novel dealt with a lot in her life, from being abused, and mistreated by her step father that ended up in a unwanted pregnancy. To being constantly let down by the people she grown to love. When Truth entered Novels life I was a little skeptical at first, since most individuals abused her but that wasn't they cased with him. He actually wanted to help her, and brought her to a foundation he attended where he was younger. There she met Lance her mentor, to me Lance was the best thing that happened to Novel. He taught her her worth, was there for her, took her in, and loved her like only a father could. I recommend this book to everyone. A lot of people are going through with Novel went through, and feel they can't overcome that, if they read this book they will realize they self worth. And also realized they can overcome every, and anything.

She has done it once again!!!! This author never disappoints!!!! I sat and read this all the way through....I couldn't put it down. It was very interesting. It held my attention from beginning to end. The only complaint that I have is I think ill lady was overused. There were lots of instances where it wasn't needed. Other than that I loved it!

About the Author

Professor Patrick Hanks holds research professorships at the Bristol Centre for Linguistics in the University of the West of England, and at the Research Institute of Information and Language Processing in the University of Wolverhampton. He is an expert lexicographer, corpus linguist, and onomastician.

Professor Richard Coates is a Professor in Linguistics at the University of the West of England. He is particularly interested in the area where linguistics, history, and geography meet and specializes in onomastics, historical change in northern and western European languages, and dialectology. He is Hon. Director of the Survey of English Place-Names and Vice-President of the International Council of Onomastic Sciences.

Dr Peter McClure is an Honorary Research Fellow and former Senior Lecturer in English Language and Literature at the University of Hull. He has published widely on the origins and historical implications of English given names and surnames, and on the methodology of anthroponymic research and anthroponymic dictionaries. He is President of the Society for Name Studies in Britain and Ireland (2014-17), a Vice-President of the English Place-Name Society, and an onomastic consultant to the Oxford English Dictionary.

Who am I, really?

In the second chapter of All Grown Up, the narrator, Andrea Bern, relays this: “A book is published. It’s a book about being single...I have no interest in reading this book. I am already single.”

The value of a book, often, is reflected in the reader’s own experiences and biases. I was single way into my adult years, surprising my family and friends (and particularly, myself) when I finally decided to couple with an emotionally healthy man who truly “got” me. After living the single life – the unavailable and sometimes, outright damaging men, the feeling of being “odd woman out” at coupled events, the (I admit it!) self-absorption, the search for how to become my most authentic and fulfilled self – I, like Andrea, do not take well to reading books that focus on a single character’s experiences.

And so I resisted the allure of the book. Andrea’s messed-up childhood with her pot-smoking activist mother and prematurely deceased junkie father, her lack of career goals, her link-ups with groan-worthy guys was far worse than anything I went through (fortunately, I had great parents and a satisfying career) but it still provoked a certain wariness (and weariness) in me. Been there, done that, nothing original.

But somewhere along the line, I got hooked and I think it was in realizing that the book’s tendrils dig deeper to encompass this question: how do we – any of us – architect our own lives? Andrea’s is “a juicy, sloppy mess of ingredients and feelings and emotions too much salt and spice, too much anxiety, always a little dribbling down the front of my shirt. But have you tasted it? Have you tasted it? It’s delicious.” Love those lines! As Andrea introduces us to other women in her life – her well-meaning mother who messes up badly, her best friend Indigo whose life isn’t anywhere as perfect as it first seems, her sister-in-law whose fate is to cope with a terminally ill child, and more, the fundamental truth we all share is our need to connect.

For anyone, particularly any woman, who has asked herself the question, “Who am I, really?”, this book will resonate.

characters don't need to be likable

Other reviewers have addressed the format and protagonist, so I'll just say this. If you liked the Middlesteins, you'll like this, too. Jami Attenberg's writing either does or doesn't work for you. Her psychologically minded fiction hits the spot for me, so I'm willing to go with whatever experiments she indulges…

This is up there as one of my favorite books of Attenberg's

This is up there as one of my favorite books of Attenberg's, and I've read all of them. It's such a quick read, and draws you into the character's life immediately. I started reading this book at the beach that morning, and couldn't leave, even after the sun was almost all the way down and my family had left to go back to our house, because I just had to finish the book. Her characters are beautiful, and complex in the most satisfying way, and it gives you an ending you didn't expect but is absolutely perfect.

Ace and Bub live on a forested island in a large body of water in an undetermined location. Various threats seem to constantly destroy the tranquillity of their preferred way of life, and the brothers are called upon to keep the peace using their wits, moxie, and more than a little bit of good luck. In book three, a boatload of moles with a population-control problem on their own island is trying to steal dirt from Beaver Island using a gargantuan vacuum cleaner. In book four, an enterprising fish attempts to clear one of the islands of its residents by pitting birds and bunnies against one another. As each group tries to drive the other away, Walter Mackerel the Fourth makes plans to open a resort for Squirrels. Each time, the brothers manage to restore order, but one always gets the impression that they'd much rather be taking it easy. This adds immeasurably to the charm of the series, fit to join the ranks of other popular kids' comics series like Jennifer L. Holm and Matthew Holm's "Babymouse" (Random) and Michael Townsend's "Kit Feeny" (Knopf). MAXWELL EATON III grew up in Vermont, where he spent his childhood climbing trees, damming streams, and spying on unsuspecting cows. He now creates children's books in Tucson, Arizona, where the trees can't be climbed, and the streams run dry, but the cows are still relatively unsuspecting. He is the author and illustrator of The Adventures of Max and Pinky series, Two Dumb Ducks, and the Flying Beaver Brothers series.

My 2nd grade son loves these books!

My son loves all 4 of these books - I just hope the author publishes more soon! They are cartoon or comic type books, my son has never been into this type of thing, but after reading one at the library chose to spend his own allowance on buying these books. He reads them over and over and picks up on the humor more and more.

My 7 year old son, who is not one who likes to sit still and read a book, loves these books. The graphic novel style keeps him interested. Though I've not read them myself to know the story line, he says they're his second favorite series (second only to Lego Ninjago).

Hossein Bidgoli, Ph.D., is professor of Management Information Systems at California State University. Dr. Bidgoli helped set up the first PC Lab in the United States and served as its first director. He is the author of 45 textbooks, 27 manuals and more than five dozen technical articles and papers on various aspects of computer applications, information systems and network security, e-commerce and decision support systems published and presented throughout the world. Dr. Bidgoli also serves as the editor-in-chief of THE HANDBOOK OF TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT, THE INTERNET ENCYCLOPEDIA, THE HANDBOOK OF INFORMATION SECURITY, THE HANDBOOK OF COMPUTER NETWORKS, and THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF INFORMATION SYSTEMS. You can be around them your entire life and even make significant money from working on them and installing them and their derivatives, but this book is invaluable to have as a foundation of why computers will run most aspects of our lives. This book gives you the language necessary to have an intelligent dialogue about the most profound technology since the printing press. I wish i would have read this book years ago.

A timely new edition for an excellent textbook

Even in the 21st century it is still difficult to comprehend the pace of new developments and progress in Information Technology. Thus, keeping up with these innovations and what is even more difficult – revealing them in a textbook for college instructors in a unique way to keep their students interested and engaged is an extremely challenging undertaking. Nevertheless, Professor Bidgoli year after year succeeded in this mission! We already have a seventh revision of his superb textbook where Professor Bidgoli succeeded keeping it both current and engaging. As a college textbook the new revision of this textbook was not created just to describe new technological developments. It was actually written based on feedback and examination of students’ challenges and instructors’ input.

And vice-versa the students should be able to relay their personal digital revolution experiences with different disciplines of MIS.

And because of the way this textbook is written with a variety of very nice and engaging auxiliary tools and online references, this textbook can be used as a reference guide for popularization and demystification of MIS in any modern business or even for home use.
