Finally--a resource for Missiological research!

Dr. Edgar J. Elliston has been doing effective educational research in cross-cultural settings for four decades, and has taught research methods and design at the doctoral level for over 30 years. Finally, Dr. Elliston has translated his years of field and teaching experience into a very understandable, and usable resource for lay people as well as academics and researchers. I like the book for several reasons. First. Elliston understands the broader concerns behind research, and is not just advising the reader on writing better survey questions. He takes the reader back to consider the underlying issues of value behind "eval-uation" and the reasons for conducting research. Second, the author is able to draw from research in multiple continents to advise the novice or experienced researcher as to the most important cultural issues to be aware of in designing the research. Third, Elliston makes the jargon of testing and psychometrics comprehensible for the untrained user. Most importantly, he helps researchers contstruct a reliable framework for doing research, before rushing into survey design and doing of research. A book like this can only come from the pen of someone who has done research effectively across cultures for 30-some years, and who has both the practical experience and perspective to shape and enhance the research efforts of newcomers.
