About the Author
Allan G. Bluman is professor emeritus at the Community College of Allegheny County, South Campus. He taught mathematics and statistics in high school, college, and graduate school for more than 35 years. Mr. Bluman is the recipient of “An Apple for the Teacher Award” for bringing excellence to the learning environment and the “Most Successful Revision of a Textbook” award from McGraw-Hill. He is the author of three mathematics textbooks and several highly successful books in the DeMYSTiFieD series, including Pre-Algrebra DeMYSTiFieD, Math Word Problems DeMYSTiFieD and Business Math DeMYSTiFieD.

Great book but too many errors

On the plus side, this book was really good, but it's a little soft on derivations towards the late middle and onward it seems. I like to know where a formula comes from, that way, I don't have to memorize it but can just build it as I need it. This worked beautifully in the 'Permutations and Combinations' section in this book, but I still had to go online for some supplementary explanations. Overall the book is a great introduction to probability, written in common language (it doesn't use jargon or pointless vocabulary, but puts it down simply). In probability books this is a really good one. If you're looking to learn about probability and have some experience in it but not a formal course (like me, and I have a physics degree), this is a good introduction. Kaplan and Princeton Review and Barron's and Schaum's are all about problems, and they don't explain crap! This book is much better than those I mentioned for this reason.
Nevertheless, I've found multiple errors. For instance, the most egregious at this point (I'm on chapter 8) is on page 137 (2nd edition). The author doesn't even bother to read the problem he wrote on the preceding page, and computes a simple division for a mean calculation using very different data than what the problem explained. I've seen this about four times now. These errors are disturbing, since the book doesn't have any explanations for the TEST answers or quizzes. It's A or B or C or D, and that's it. So if the author makes mistakes on these (and I've caught one), then it can be demoralizing for a reader. I'll check back in when I'm finished with the book to issue a final review.
Ultimately, if you use this book, have some experience going into this journey, or supplement what you learn from Mr. Bluman with online help or a friend who's good with maths (better than you are).

Recommend this book!

Really good guide for preparing to the standardized tests like gre and gmat and sat!!! It's really good explanation of probability theory and pretty quickly refresh math knowledge from high school. I recommend this book for those who struggle with probability theory!

Allan Bluman's Probability Demystified

The subject of probability begins with some easy concepts having to do with 100 coin tosses and the like, and quickly escalates into what has always been for me a mathematical maze of abstractions. Finally I've found a book that is helping me sort it all out. Allan Bluman seems to set just the right pace, bringing the reader up to speed but not so fast that you get lost. I found Chapter 11, Game Theory, particularly interesting because of the wide range of areas that it applies to -- everything from two-person games to doomsday warfare scenarios. Suffice to say I liked the book a lot and recommend it highly for anyone with an inquiring mind.
