About the Author
Eric Williams was Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago from their achievement of independence in 1962 until his death in 1981. He is the author of the classic Capitalism and Slavery.

Very good read

If you're looking for a comprehensive political and economic history of the Caribbean, look no further. I bought this book to read before and during a trip to the US Virgin Islands, and it did not disappoint. It's a little dry at times and gets bogged down in stats and figures, but overall, it's worth the effort. Williams finishes it up with a nice thesis summary in the last chapter. FYI, this book only runs through the late 60s, so don't expect to read about anything after that.

All the Bits and Pieces of Caribbean History That You Never Knew

This book is an extremely well written history which covers several centuries and shows how the Caribbean Islands and people have been moulded. It also gives insight into the chains of historical events and how they have impacted the region that we know today.

Gary B. Shelly wrote and published his first computer education textbook in 1969. More than twenty million copies of Shelly Cashman Series' textbooks have been sold. Tough to Complete Assignments

While I love having this text on my Kindle and iPad for ease of taking it with me on the go, it is almost impossible to complete reading assignments without asking for more information from the instructor. There is no indication to page numbers so when they assign pages 351-371 there is no way to know exactly what they want without asking. That is quite frustrating. Otherwise the direct links are great and the ability to retrieve my highlights in one central location is wonderful.

this textbook is terrific. I really enjoyed reading it and then going online to the recommended links and tutorials. I was very edgy enrolling in this course as I am an older student and not very "techosavvy". The book offers so many resources and also explained how to do several online assignments very clearly which made the course easier for me . I really like this book!

The condition of the book could have been much better but you get what you paid for. As for the book's content, the purchase was for a college course so the was little to no interest on the subject matter. I did enjoy the online content that came with this purchase but overall, most of the information in this edition is outdated. (The bookstore seller even mentioned it was outdated. Why it's still in use, I have no clue.)

David Gillespie (Russian, U. of Bath) took up the task, choosing not to try to guess what innovations Wade had in mind. Better in the hard copy, but worth it even for the Kindle Version

This a very good Russian Grammar resource that I got for free in hard copy and then purchased in the Kindle version when the other one was "decorated" by one of my cats. While the Kindle version has a few printing errors (certain stressed Russian letters appear in a larger font then the rest of the letters in the word and there are (very few) typos), it is still worth the buy for the portability and I would recommend it if you intend to study it from start to finish. If, however, you need it as a reference book to pick up and look something up at random, the hard copy is a better choice since the Kindle, by its very nature, is harder to navigate (it does have a searchable Table of Contents which is a nice feature, but not a searchable index for specific words/ideas which would be great technology to have). In either format I highly recommend it.

An excellent Russian Grammar, but a disappointing Kindle version.

If I was just judging the content of the original work I would have given it an unconditional 5 stars but, once again, it seems the Kindle version is an inferior product because of the number of typos and transposed letters in the Russian text. In fact, I have not purchased a single book from Kindle that does not have typos, but this one is particularly annoying because a) it cost over $30, and b) for those learning a foreign language, it is rather important that the words you are trying to learn are spelled correctly! Also, certain Russian characters appear very tiny compared to others and are barely legible on the Paperwhite. Why is there so much less quality control for Kindle products than works printed on paper? I really don't understand this. Finally, could Amazon please develop a Russian dictionary for the Kindle so that students of Russian, like myself, can download Russian-language texts and look up words as we are going along?

Great Reference

This book is a must have for learning Russian grammar. It is very thorough with lots of examples. Each example in Russian has a full English translation. Every part of speech gets its own chapter that explains its usage in detail. There is also a workbook that accompanies the grammar book. Like most texts written for English speakers learning Russian, this text is written in British English. I had to Google some things like "gawper." Some grammatical rules are different between American and British English. As long as you don't mind that, this book is great. A must have for anyone learning Russian.

About the Author
JOHN ELIOT, Ph.D., is on the faculty at Rice University with expertise in business and psychology and adjunct professor at SMU Cox School of Business Leadership Center. He is the former Director of Rice's program in sports management and performance enhancement. In 2000, he cofounded The Milestone Group, which provides performance consultation and training to business executives, professional athletes, and corporations nationwide. Clients have included Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs, Adidas, NASA, the United States Olympic Committee, The Mayo Clinic, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and hundreds of elite individual performers.

Gives self improvement junkies like me pause for thought

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world. The unreasonable man persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. All progress depends on the unreasonable man.

This is the message of John Eliot. Basically he says that none of the real champions of sport, business, art, etc ever followed a prescribed success formula as listed by the Steven Covey's, Tony Robbin's, etc. Instead they were just confident people who believed in doing things their own way and were passionate about what they were doing. Pause for thought for all of us trying to incrementally improve ourselves by reading scroes of self improvement books, biographies, paying too much attention to 360 feedback or appraisals listings of our weaknesses.

His key messages are:

1. Don't use your head. Lose yourself to the moment, passion. Don't get calm, get charged. Trust yourself. Don't overanalyse. Put pressure on yourself! Devise a method to get yourself in the right frame. Use it every time.

2. Don't put limits on yourself. Don't set goals. They aren't stretching, they're limiting. Chase a dream that is downright unachievable.

3. Hard work is overrated. The key is to do the right things, not necessarily doing things right

4. Don't try and hedge your risks. Put all your eggs in one basket and WATCH THAT BASKET

5. There is no such thing as too much self assurance. Arrogant SOBs who believe in themselves are the ones who run the world. Don't believe the experts (think Dell, Buffet, Gates, Paige&Brin, Columbus, the earth is flat?, etc). And confidence is not your track record... these guys weren't confident in themselves after they had proved themselves right... no, they proved it before.

6. Being a team player involves conforming and conforming will at the end of the day bring you nothing but mundane results being achieved by all the others conforming

Good insights but reads like a College textbook

I bought this book due to the overwhelmingly positive reviews so I must say from the outset I was disappointed. The information is thought provoking and I will try the techniques to see if they actually work. The problem I had is with the writing. It again appears to be a case of stretching a 100 page book into 250 pages. John Eliot throws every profession together, (with major emphasis on athletes) so whether you are an athlete or a shoe salesman these techniques are supposed to work. In this regard the book is unfocused, attempting to be all things to all people. As opposed to one size fits all, Eliot should have had chapters on how specific professions could benefit from his techniques. We are instead given anecdotes on how an athlete performed on a given occasion due to a change in approach.

I really wanted to like this book but found it too clinical and yes boring. Halfway through the book I found myself counting the pages to the end. I finally finished and felt I had completed a College textbook written by a sports coach that was just NOT engaging.

I'm sorry if I sound harsh but my expectations were very high and unfortunately not met.

Haha, no.

99% of self help books and websites are useless. Why? Because they don't teach you HOW TO THINK. All they do is give you exercises and tactics for accomplishing things. The funny thing is that none of the great achievers ever used any of these tactics, they just think different.

Many self improvement gurus try to come up with theories and philosophies about how to live life and be fulfilled. These are completely useless because 1) they are not based on science, 2) they are not practical, and 3) great people like Michael Jordan and Richard Branson never followed any system or theory like that.

This book tries to explain the way successful people think. These people do not sit down and write a list of goals they want to achieve in 30 days. They do not use NLP techniques. They do not plan ahead. They do not worry about the probability of failure. They are not realistic. They are not results oriented. They do not strive for perfection.

These people are irrationally confident in themselves. Deep down they really believe in themselves and they know that they will accomplish what they want NO MATTER WHAT. They have dreams, not goals, and they enjoy pursuing their dreams. They live in their own little world. Failures and criticism do not affect them.

The main lessons I got from this book are:

- The Trusting Mindset.
- Pressure and stress improve performance.
- Anxiety is a cognitive misinterpretation of stress and the fight/flight response.
- Confidence comes before success.
- Focusing on goals is counterproductive. CHASE A DREAM instead of setting goals.
- Successful people do not follow systems or formulas. They are extremely unrealistic and irrationally confident. They focus on POSSIBILITIES, not probabilities.

The reason I don't give this book 5 stars is because the author is not a very good teacher. After reading Your Brain at Work by David Rock (probably the greatest book there is on productivity at work) I found this book to be very boring. The author tries too hard to illustrate his points with the use stories. There are just too many stories in it and overall the book is kinda messy. I had to skip several pages because of this.

I also didn't like the second part at all. I didn't find it very practical and in my opinion this book could've ended at page 125 without losing any effect.

I will apply the teachings of this book and will let you guys know, 2-3 years from now, if it really changed my life or not.

Great Unique Suppliment to the 3.5 D&D Rules

If you were going to create a Wal-Mart in your D&D campaign, this book would be a must. It contains a myriad of unique equipment, weapons, armor, instruments, tools, clothing items and knick-knacks. They have whole sections devoted to useful items (both magical and mundane) for Sorcerers, Bards, Monks. Rogues, Fighters and even a section for Psychic Mastery, just to name a few. A must for every game master.

Good buy perfect for those who like a lot of weapons

This book is great for those hoping to increase the size of thier weapon and item arsenal. If not for the some what unorganized listings, its an absolute buy. It lists alchemicaly made items,weapons,armor,and the average but wicked equipment such as the glasscutter for stealthy rouges. It has no vehicals however which I will admit is a let down. All in all though it is worth your money.

Such is Marriage Games, one of the best books I've read this year.

Adam and Diana have been married four years - four happy years, Adam thought. A note on the kitchen counter one morning defies that notion, however, because Diana has left him. She is unhappy, she no longer loves him, and she wants this marriage to end.

Adam's initial shock gives way to an agonizing pain that demands action: "I needed to become a man unburdened by love. I didn't have a plan yet. I didn't have a beginning, middle, and end. Just a concept without form. I didn't articulate it to myself, but somewhere on the back burners, something started brewing. Something difficult, bold, and utterly callous."

One thing you quickly learn about Adam is that he is a Dominant, yet his marital bed was absent any D/s relationship because Adam believes it is impossible for him to love a submissive. And one thing Adam knows without question is that he loves his wife.

He also knows that he is not ready for his marriage to end.

To forestall Diana's demand for a divorce, Adam proposes an exchange: 30 days together, during which Diana will do whatever Adam asks, after which he will give her not only the divorce but the 51 percent he owns in her and her father's company.

Reiss has a running motif of cold and ice that reflects the state of this marriage. Adam has frozen part of himself off, leaving a cold void where his dominance once thrived. He refers to Diana as his "little huntress," but her mythological namesake pursues creatures whose hearts beat warm blood. What Adam can't see is that part of his heart, much like the snow drifts in Manhatten and the Hamptons, is too cold to hunt. When Adam observes that his "toe made a divot in the crust of ice but didn't break through," he might as well be talking about himself.

Yes, Adam loves his wife. You will not question this. in fact, you will agonize with him over Diana's absence. Adam professes that she is "light, life, energy. Everything." And you believe him. You know this to be true. Reiss uses this to almost turn you against Diana, to dislike her with the same intensity with which Adam loves her.

And then Reiss changes the "game," and you find yourself standing on that frozen crust of ice, feeling it crack underneath you.

This book is so amazingly well written that I am struggling with how to describe it. I have not marked up a book as I marked Marriage Games in a long, long time. When Reiss is in Adam's head, she immerses you in his thoughts and feelings, grabbing you by the jugular and not releasing you. This book will exhaust your emotional reserves in a way that very few books do, but it's a good way, in a way that makes you feel as if you just experienced something phenomenal.

Truly, the less you know about this book, the better you will be. Go into it ready to be challenged. Go into it ready to love Adam, yet also be prepared to understand him better, sometimes in ways that make you weep for him rather than on behalf of him. You also need to be prepared to rethink how you look at marriage, to see it as an organic, ever-changing entity in which two partners grow and adapt to each other's growth. You need to learn that a game can only be played by two willing participants, and not all games can be won.

As this is the first in a duet, it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. Or maybe "cliffhanger" is the wrong word to use. It ends on that icy crust, and you hear the ice beginning to break. Reiss leaves you wondering if you - and Adam and Diana - will make it safely across or if the ice will tear you asunder.

Raw, Sensual Addictive

Christine Reiss has truly outdone herself with the story of Adam and Diana. She has written something so raw, emotional, sensual and addictive.

Sometimes you read a book and you feel the words on such a deep level that you literally have to take several steps back and process what you just read. This story consumed, enthralled and enraptured me. The complexity of these characters made me think and feel things that I never thought possible. I both loved and hated Adam and Diana for their flaws and shortcomings.

At times I wanted to be Diana, forced to my knees and bend to Adam's dominance. And in other moments I wanted to be Serena, who would willingly give herself to someone just to receive pain to derive the ultimate pleasure.

I felt Adam's betrayal towards Diana. At the same time understanding his deep conflict over these two parts of himself. The rawness of their feelings for each other was palpable. I was keenly aware of the letter Diana wrote to Adam, and my heart broke a little each time he sent unanswered text. I felt the cold wind of winter in Montauk blowing, and heard of crushing ice under foot.

I was truly transported while reading and I honestly don't know if I ever have before.

To say this is must read is understatement. Christine beautifully crafted this story, which to me is her best yet.

What a perfect read - everything about the Marriage Games #1 is right, right, right! But why? The story line & concept, CD Reiss' brilliant execution and some the most emotionally complex characters I've ever read. I can't even find my words...not easily at least but here goes.

I read it in one fell swoop. Why I would start a CD Reiss book in the evening and expect to put it down before I was done? What was i thinking? I just wanted...I'm not even sure what I wanted. Did I think there was an HEA in this (book 1 of a duet)? No, not at all. But still I wanted to feel hopeful for them together, not apart.

Did I think Adam was blindsided? Betrayed? Yes. I had so much sympathy for him. Diana was simply callous and unfeeling. I really didn't like her and I struggled with that because well, if Adam loved her, surely she was worthy. But she wasn't panning out that way. Then I realized there are 2 sides to the story and she really is in self preservation mode. Once the story moves to her perspective, I softened towards her a lot. And then I thought maybe there is hope. But deep down, I dreaded the past repeating itself.

The secondary characters - Stephan & Serena are great for the story line. They are reminders that there are rules in the BDSM community and considering the practice, they are incredibly important. I had an aha moment as I realized that even DOMs have hard-lines and the unique situation made Adams even more imperative. Can't say I liked either one of them though. Nope ! Lots of manipulation going in throughout the story but these two are so calculated in their efforts.

I love where it ended and how I feel - a little anxious, a little hopeful, a lotta worried ;-)

Pastoral ministry by the book

In the contemporary culture, there exist multitudes of books and ideas regarding pastoral ministry. A significant number of books utilize pragmatic or market driven techniques as a means to carry out ministry. Charles Jefferson's approach to pastoral ministry is rooted and grounded in the word of God as the final authority on these matters. The proceeding review is an outline that I wrote for a class. Chapter 1: The Shepherd Idea in Scripture and History

Historically Bishop, Presbyter, Preacher, Priest, Clergyman, Rector, Parson and Minister were utilized to communicate the role of the Shepherd (7-9). The term Shepherd has withstood the test of time without loosing its meaning and Jesus utilized it for himself (10-11). The language and imagery of Shepherding is throughout the Scripture. It is seen in language as, "feed my lambs, tend my sheep, feed my sheep...tend the flock of God which is among you" (13-14). The Shepherding terminology is minimal within the works of men such as Athanasius, Jerome, Aquinas and Trindentine catechism, the Thirty-nine articles and Westminster Confession (17). When the idea of Shepherding the flock of God was lost, the concept of Priest took over (17-18). The concept of a Shepherd is much deeper then the concept of a Priest or a Preacher (21). A good Shepherd cannot truly serve over a couple hundred people, but will need a staff of Pastors to Shepherd properly a larger congregation (22). Youthful Pastors enjoy the spotlight, at times have low love for people, but should study Shepherding and allow Christ to strengthen them in that area (25-28). The greatest test for a pastor is his actions behind closed doors and if he feeds and tends the sheep entrusted by God (30-31).

Chapter 2: The Shepherd's Work

The concept of a Shepherd is greatly lost and narrowed down to baptisms, funerals, weddings and visiting the sick (33). To understand the concept of Shepherding one should look to the time where the metaphor originated (34). The work of Shepherding in Palestine was not a simplistic task, but diverse and labor intensive (35). There are seven distinct attributes of an Eastern Shepherd, which carry over into ministry. The first is a watchman, who watch's over and warns the flock of danger (36). The second is to guard and protect the sheep since the sheep cannot bite, scratch, kick and run slowly (38). The third is to guard the sheep and lead them, not drive them (40-41). The Shepherd is a physician who points people to Jesus, the healer of wounded hearts (44). He is a savior who reaches out to those who need rescue (46). The sixth primary task of the Shepherd is to feed the sheep (50). A good pastor will be a good Preacher and a good Preacher will pastor his sheep, one cannot exist without the other (53-54). The seventh and final mark is a Shepherd loves the sheep, which will bind all the others together (55-56).

Chapter 3: The Shepherd's Opportunity

Many speak as if the need for a pastor is outgrown and unneeded, but this is far from the truth (57-58). The need for Pastors is high and the modern mans education and degree does not change his need to be Shepherded (59-60). Unfortunately, many Pastors are shortening their pastorate when there is a need for the pastor to do life-on-life with his people (65-67). The idea of efficiency and conservation are infusing many and if churches want to get the most out of the soil, they must get into the lives of their people (76-78). Seeing pastoral ministry as individually focused can even make the smallest parish work great (82).

Chapter 4: The Shepherd's Temptations

There are two primary temptations which Shepherd's are drawn to, which are "the love of gain and the love of power: covetousness and ambition" (85). These temptations can often draw on a pastor's heart, since men who proceed into ministry enter into a "vow of poverty" (86). A Shepherd can receive power and stature, which are priceless to many modern minds (87). The Minister is not wealthy financially, but wealthy rewarded in other regards (87-88). Pastors should not seek the praise of men nor covetousness, which can lead into being careless, a coward, and even selfishness (92-95). The pastor who desires power will turn to force feeding the sheep and pushing his own agenda (103-105). A healthy pastor will look to the humility of Christ and not dominate his people, but feed the sheep with tender passion and care (107-110).

Chapter 5: The Shepherd's Reward

The first and highest earthly reward a man can receive is love, the faithful Shepherd will certainly receive an abundance of love from faithful hearts (113). Shepherding brings about a lasting reminder in the hearts of people, while preaching can often glimmer and be forgotten (114-115). There is great reward and gratification for the Shepherd who is able to pour his life into another (116-117). Rewards exist for being a good pastor and a good Preacher, one should not pit on against the other (121-122). Pastoral work does several things for a Shepherd, such as providing sermon material, providing insight into human nature, increases the form of his sermons, provides originality in preaching, and guards from delusion (123-132). The pastor also receives an ever-increasing spiritual character (135). The last and greatest of all rewards is fellowship with Christ and to receive a "crown of glory" (140).

Timeless encouragement to anyone taking on the role of a pastor. Clear, Biblical principals as to our role - what we're to be, what we're not to be. Beyond cultures and trends, this speaks to Christ-like servant leadership. Great read - I underlined the tar out of my first copy.

Phenomenal, challenging, humbling and encouraging.

One of the most helpful books on being a pastor. But be forewarned, this will challenge your socks off. Jefferson pulls no punches, painting a clear picture of the humble Good Shepherd and shattering any illusions we may have about the prestige and power of the pulpit. True shepherding is hard work that should be largely unknown to the world. If you want to truly serve the Lord and his people, read this and pray hard about applying it to your ministry.
